|
|
Hi all! I am arriving in Korea in 2 days and wanted my mom to ship a few things that I didn't have room to pack.
For heavier boxes, what is the cheapest company to use? (If you don't need the contents quickly?)
What company ships goods the fastest?
Is customs strict with items that come in via mail?
Any info is appreciated! |

I've always relied on the good old US Postal Service. If your not in a hurry surface mail is pretty cheap and, in my view, reliable. Generally surface mail takes from 1 to 2 months for delivery.
I've shipped around 50 packages this way and NEVER had a problem (knock on wood).
To avoid customs charges have the item descriptions (on the customs form) marked as "USED". That generally gets it through without problem. |

USPS doesn't do international surface mail anymore. |

As above, surface mail is no longer available. Your best bet might be Priority Mail flat rate boxes, but despite the name there is a limit on the weight of packages sent internationally this way. |

Thanks for the info OiGirl. Do you happen to know the weight limit and/or cost? |

...The max weight isn't stated on the website. It only states it is the "limit set by the individual country." |

Since the USPS no lnoger does surface mail, can you no longer ship surface mail from Korea to the US either? That will put a major dent in my plans when I move home in December. |

Korea still has surface mail to North America and to the best of my knowledge there are no plans to eliminate it in the foreseeable future. |

has anyone shipped heavy-ish boxes to Korea from the U.S. recently?
I'm going to move to Ulsan soon and I'm getting reimbursed up to a limited amount for moving expenses to Korea, but my local UPS store said that it would be around $280 (!!) for one 16 in. x 16 in. box (of around 40, 50 lbs). The guy said that USPS wouldn't make too much less of a dent at around $240. |

At that price, you can check a third suitcase. Less than that, on some carriers. |

Was there a reason ever given to why the USPS stopped Intl. surface mail?
It's a crock of bull dung. |
