If you can work privates legally anyway, I would take the 2nd option b/c it gives you all the benefits. How many hours is it though? If its between 30-35, then go for it. That way you will have health insurance and pension (which if you are american, you can take back with you-yours and your bosses payments). Then you can teach on the side if you want to make more. |

I have two job offers on the table and need to make a decision very soon.
A) 30,000 won/ hour, no benefits whatsoever, must secure my own housing but will be given 5 million won in key money - guaranteed 96 hours a month and can work up to 120 hours a month = anywhere from 2,880,000 to 3,600,000 won/ month plus bonuses based on performance. May have to work weekends, but I don't mind. Don't know where I'll be working yet but it'll be in one of six locations in Seoul proper.
B) 2,300,000 won/ month plus housing, medical/dental benefits and paid vacation. 30 hours a week, no weekends. Hagwon and housing is located in Mokdong. Haven't checked out the housing yet, but I hear it's decent.
Should I take the higher hourly rate or go with the option that is more stable? Just fyi - my goal is to make and save as much money as possible, so the first offer is more tempting just for the earning potential alone, but I also plan on doing some private tutoring on the side (my visa allows for this) to supplement my income regardless of which offer I accept. I'm a newbie so would appreciate some input. Thanks! |
Hmm...There was a poster a few months ago (who subsequently got banned) that pretty much had it all figured out. Something doing 20-30 hours of privates a week at 50,000 won/hour and up. If I can remember who it was, maybe I'll link a couple of threads. Anyway, she definitely gave the impression that she knew the ins and outs really well.
Edit: Ah, found it. Yeah, you should read this thread. This chic definitely had it all figured out.

Yeah I can work privates legally but I don't have any experience so probably won't start teaching privates right away even though I'd like to. Option B = 30 hours a week and no weekends. I can't decide and it's driving me crazy. If I wanted to get health insurance on my own, could I do that? Do you know how much it would cost? |

Is 50,000 won/hour the standard going rate for privates? |

You can pretty much assume that whatever Freaka said is the solid gold truth. |

Yes, I am joking. Why? Well, aside from the similarity in the names (Freaka, Freakstar) and the fact that Freakstar registered one week after Freaka got banned, there is the fact that Freakstar and Freaka are both gyopos, and Freakstar admits to arriving in Korea when Freaka had claimed she was going to arrive.
So, while it's possible that Freakstar really isn't Freaka, I highly doubt they aren't the same person. But who knows? I could be wrong.
Another reason I find this amusing is that if Freakstar is indeed Freaka, then she has clearly lowered her expectations from the 5+ million won a month she was expecting to earn here right off the plane (which most people told her was unlikely, but again, she didn't want to hear that, did she?) |

Hmm...well, if I were a female then I guess I could be this Freaka person. I find some of you people amusing. |

Some of us find you people amusing, too.
Then again, some of us find you people annoying.
Sometimes...just depends on what kind of day it's been. |

Oh, must be a case of mistaken identity then. I'm sure your choice in names, the fact that you are a gyopo, that you arrived at the same time, etc, are all just complete coincidences then. My sincerest apologies. |
