Why do some people display pics of Mao on bags, shirts, etc? He killed tens of millions of people, right? What are these people thinking? If they support communism/socialism why can't they display another symbol? |

I agree with you, JMO. No one would display an image of Hitler even though he was responsible for about 1/8 as many deaths as Mao. I want to call people who sport images of Mao idiots but I should be civil, control myself and hear their side of the story first. |

This is what Wiki has to say about him:
Quote: |
Mao Zedong (December 26, 1893 September 9, 1976) (also Mao Tse-tung in Wade-Giles; pronunciation (helpinfo)) was a Chinese Marxist military and political leader and philosopher, who led the Communist Party of China (CPC) to victory against the Kuomintang (KMT) in the Chinese Civil War, and served as leader of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. Mao is also recognized as a poet and calligrapher.[1]
Regarded as one of the most important figures in modern world history,[2] Mao is still a controversial figure today, over thirty years after his death. He is held in high regard in China where he is often portrayed as a great revolutionary leader and a military and political genius who defeated Chiang Kai-shek in the Civil War, and transformed the country into a major power through his Maoist social and economic reforms. However, many of Mao's policies and socio-political programmes such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution are blamed by critics from both within and outside China for causing severe damage to the culture, society, economy and foreign relations of China, as well as enormous and unnecessary loss of lives, claiming that the total number of lives lost ranged from 40,000,000[3] to 78,860,000 people.[4]
Although still officially held in high regard in China, his influence has been largely overshadowed by the political and economic reforms of Deng Xiaoping and other leaders since his death.[5][6] |
Frankly, I am Chinese (well, Chinese British, really) - and I can't tell you why people hold him in such high regard, either.... |

I always thought seeing Mao and Che on merchandise was hilarious because they worked so hard to be communist, yet they're on something being sold for a profit...which is capitalism. |

I'm sure if you looked around you could find similar Nazi paraphernalia in China. There was a Hitler restaurant of some kind in India recently. |

There are a few Mao bars in Ireland. A Hitler bar wouldn't fly in Ireland but a Mao cafe can because very little people know about him.
I don't see a problem drinking in a Hitler bar if the establishment and patrons are not trying to condone his actions but are doing it out of ignorence.
I'd drink in a Darth Vader cafe before I'd drink in a Ben Wan Kenoba cafe. The bad guys are always more interesting.
I'm not gay by the way (just reread my last sentence). |

What I mean is he bought it as a touristy thing. He got a t shirt as well. I ca understand buying mein kampf for the insight on how Hitler thought but not as a thing u bring back from holiday along with your hitler tshirt. |

Look at it this way. He killed that many people and he's still regarded as a good guy. Now that's not something every man can do. |

Why do people wear shirts with "Che' "?......pop art
So why NOT wear a portrait of Mao?.......again, pop art
I have a hammer-n-sickle tshirt and I sport it at school, not because of the ideological value, just because it is pop art
Think of it this way; which would you rather see?
A portrait of Mao or a portrait of Hitler or Osama on a tee?
I prefer the former to the latter.... |
