I was walking down the busy rush hour sidewalk, minding my own business when I felt something underneath my foot, I looked down and realized I had stepped on a discusting bloody dead rat. It was the most horrific thing I've ever seen. I'm a big guy and don't normally freak out but it was such a shock that I yelled at the top of my lungs, "Arrghhh!" I started hopping on one foot, still yelling "arrghhh," then tried to drag my foot on the concrete to scrape off the reminants that had adhered to my shoe.
Despite being extremely upset that this had happened to me, I had to laugh when I saw the reaction on the faces of the unsuspecting Korean people that were walking close by. They were minding their own business too, walking to the bus stop, when all of a sudden a big freaky foreigner started screaming and hopping on one foot. The lady on the sidewalk next to me must have set a world record she jumped so high.
Another exciting day ... |

I've seen two rats in Korea. The first one was lying dead on the street. My friend saw it but I did not. I stepped on the bloated mutha and almost bit the dust. I had never seen a rat before.
The second rat was live. Grungy mutha fukca rustled in the weeds beside me and I jumped and squealed. Thankfully there were two goodlooking girls to witness and laugh at my bravery. |

I haven't yet seen a rat in Korea (I know they're all over). I take it they're not kept as pets, I've never seen them in a pet store, not even as feeders. What do people feed their pet snakes, then? |

Some snakes only eat lizards, some eat mice/fish/bunnies/kittens(small mammals), and one type only eats insects. |

i live behind a row of what koreans are always telling me are 'famous' fish restaurants in Jeju.
There are always dead rats out the back, usually still under the rock that they have been battered with |

That was pretty funny.
Just what kind of shoes/boots were you wearing? It sounds like you managed to turn the animal into a paste. |

They probably thought it was some Western dance thing that you were doing and the lady decided to copy you and have fun?
Anyway, I don't give a rat's a*s that you stepped on a rat. Just messing with you, man. That did suck... |

Rat paste! That would pretty much ruin my day.
Last week I saw a dead rat on the sidewalk on a bridge. My amateur CSI appraisal was "blunt force head trauma" for cause of death. I didn't jump or scream, just walked around it.
However, later that day, I was on another errand and *just about* stepped on a soggy dead cat. I gasped and involuntarily drew my arm up to my chest defensively. Defending myself against a dead cat? I felt like one of those Korean girls who yelps "Omona!" every time someone makes a sudden movement. |

I was in that Hongdae park and I saw something moving in the trees above my head. I looked up expecting to see a squirrel, but instead I saw a nasty furry rat with beady eyes.
....how often can rats be seen in trees????! |

I had a rat experience in Hongdae park too!
It was a Sunday evening after a raucous birthday and I sat down with my friend Dan to enjoy the last of my homemade birthday cheesecake.
We heard a rustling in the bushes behind us, and Dan said "Aww, it's a mouse!" and offered it a chunk of MY birthday cake. I took notice of the fact that the creature sniffing beside us was longer than my hand with a thick wormy tail, yelled "It's A RAT!" We argued about its genus and species for a bit, and I forbade Dan from giving it any more precious cake. We named it "Chucky The Birthday Rat" and remember him affectionately to this day. |

are you guys sure you're talkin' bout rats? I've only seen mice, ugly mice, big mice, but only mice. I don't know if that makes anybody feel any better....also, when I talk to my adult students, they all know what a mouse is, but not a rat, when i explain it they say there is no korean equivelent. maybe i'm wrong. |
