I'm looking at buying something similar to this:
http://www.xpcgear.com/altechmg35.html
I'd probably buy a 500GB HD to go inside it.
Is it worth going down this road, or should I just find an external 500GB with a cooling fan?
Has anyone tried both? |

Are you wanting something to play movies with? |
I'm hoping to fill it up with movies and TV series, and be able to carry it to friend's places etc and hook it up to their and my own TV's with ease. |

So this thing plays avi files and such to your TV?
Sounds interesting.
Can't I do that from my laptop just the same without this?
HDD not included? |

It would work the same way as connecting a laptop to a tv using av-out cables.
But the advantages of this would be wireless capability (not in my example, but that's what I'm looking for) and use as an external harddrive also. It would have its own menu, remote control etc. |

Is this available in Korea??
This sounds like what I've been looking for to play my downloaded movies on my TV. |

Yes, I got mine at Yongsan IPark computer building. Cost is about 110,000 plus cost of hard drive. Go to 5th or 6th floor and ask around. Take a picture of the Mediagte to help things along. It comes with a remote and the interface (some is in Korean) is similar to a dvd player. Most files types are supported and 700mb avis are quite watchable on the t.v through this. |

I went shopping at Yongsan for one of these a couple of weeks ago.
I couldn't find one which I really liked, so I ended up just getting a 500GB HDD and external case with fan.
My problems were that a lot of them didn't support all of the files I wanted them too, some of them seemed years old, others didn't have fans, others weren't firmware upgradeable, others didn't have enough connections on the back to satisfy me, others seemed cheap and poorly put together. Then I found a perfect one, only to be told that despite it being on display, it had been recalled due to some kind of fault. No other shop had it either.
All in all a very frustrating day.
I did find one brand I liked, which fulfilled all of the above criteria, but the sales guy wouldn't budge from 300,000 which seemed too much. Can't remember what it was called.
I'm going to look again in a couple of months. |

If you are happy with just an external case with no player capabilities, check out NewerTechnology's cases. I just found that they have a new version out there. MiniStack V3 looks interesting with cooling fan, integrated hub, USB 2.0 (x3), FW400 (x1), FW800 (x2) and eSata (x1) connections.
Maybe you have to get it from abroad as I do not know if you can buy it in Korea. |
