Has anyone here done a PGCE in Secondary English. How did you find it and how were your experiences teaching in British schools compared to doing TEFL work?

Also any public school teachers from U.S., Canada, N.Zealand, Australia etc - how does it compare to teaching in Korea?

PGCE's are qualifications for teaching the academic subject (not the linguistic elements) of English in State schools/Private schools in England. It is quite different from TEFL.

I've done a PGCE in History. They are very hard work as you basically teach and do a university course at the same time. If you are looking to become a qualified state teacher in England then I would suggest doing the GTP where you get paid a lot more and there is a greater emphasis on classroom time.

Any more questions you can PM me.

Hope this has been helpful.

I did the PGCE in English in 2000. It was not a joyful experience and now people have the opportunity of GTP I think they should take it.

I don't know how old you are, but I found as a 30 something female, I was often passed over at job interviews for younger or male recruits, even those who had been on the same course as me, who had obtained lower results!

English teachers are two a penny unlike maths teachers.

It is totally different to EFL, of course ultimately it is more financially rewarding and secure. Don't underestimate the difficulty of the job. It can be rewarding but it can also be exhausting. You have to really be committed and pick your first teaching job very carefully.

Good luck!
