Apparently just changed on August 1st. It was 50,000 for all nationalities, but for Americans in particular, they just doubled it two weeks ago. |

Why higher for Americans? I am not any richer than other nationalities. America does allot for China in the form of buying it's products which is transferring Americas great wealth to the Chinese. This is a big deal today. When I was shopping around with the travel agencies for a Beijing trip over summer holiday, I was turned off from going to China over this. They started charging Americans double before August 1st. I do not believe China is a friend nor an ally of America, but yet it depends on America in building its' new wealth while discriminating against Americans. That comes off as very low class society to me that I want nothing with. You would think if China was really friendly and appreciative, they would not act like this. You think Korea nickles and dimes you to death, the Chinese will over charge you many times more for everything than what it charges locals for the same things while you get conned. I have heard it time after time from experienced travelers.
Be thankful Korea doesn't act like this which makes Korea a good place to work and get an Asian experience.
What's the deal with China? It's communist, corrupt, and 2 faced. I am opting for SE Asia for my next travels. |

| Yeah, I have nothing to do this week, so I looked into doing a quick and cheap China trip, but I found it would be $100 to get a visa processed quickly! Screw that. |

I am pretty sure that this is done because of the cost of visas for Chinese travelling to America. |

As the above quote shows, the reason for the fee change is reciprocity. According to United States Embassy in China:
| Quote: |
| Most non-diplomatic and non-official visas issued by United States consular officers abroad require a visa "application" (machine-readable visa - MRV) fee that recovers for the United States the costs associated with manufacturing, processing, and printing the visa. The current visa "application" fee is $100.00. |
The issue of reciprocity is explained there as follows:
| Quote: |
| Visa issuance fees are based on "reciprocity," (what another country charges a United States citizen for a similar-type of visa). The United States strives to eliminate visa issuance fees whenever possible; however, when a foreign government imposes such fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a "reciprocal" fee to nationals of that country for similar-type of visas. Visa issuance fees are paid in U.S. or Chinese currency at the Embassy or Consulate when the visa is approved and issued. |
So, the US government is saying the cost for processing and issuing a visa for a Chinese citizen is $100. China is, acting under the principle of reciprocity, charging the same fee for a US citizen. |
