How in the world is the nature of an internet board that is based on living abroad misogynistic? |
I believe things have a nature. I think that objects have an ideal nature, that people have an "ideal" nature, and that populations can have an "ideal" nature. In this case, I think that the nature of the board is a reflection of the motivations of its posters.
IMO, sexual opportunity is the largest, or one of the largest, motivators behind the EFL job market in Korea. Thousands of beta males who didn't get laid enough in University see Korea as a low risk opportunity to meet a lot of women of lower socioeconomic status. Hence the large demographic bias towards single men. These are guys who haven't done well with women and probably resent them a little for it. However, set them up with the right woman, and they're putty. (I have seen soooooo many of these guys come and go.) Hence all of the threads objectifying women.
Maybe I got my statement a little backwards. I should have said, the nature of the posters, and by extension, the nature of the board, is a little misogynistic. |

Misogyny is the wrong word for what happens on this board. It's not really hatred of women at all, but the sexual objectification of women.
|
i dunno... the korean feminists in korea, (very scary bunch, scarier than the nor cal variety of berkeley feminists I know) are VERY against objectification of women. they organize and protest these sorts of things, in the tens of thousands. with sticks... sharp sticks. |
Wow, where are these women?
And I do think these posts comparing the hotness of women are misogynistic and demeaning, not to mention racist. Its nothing new though. Anyone who grows up looking a little bit different gets this kind of abuse. In Korea, women who aren't Asian look different. Where I grew up, Jewish-looking beauty was not the norm, so that was not considered attractive. It seems ridiculous to pit women against each other in this manner, to not recognize that the very idea of beauty has been conditioned into our minds by various sources...it is in fact possible to deprogram yourself and notice a deeper beauty, a lasting sexiness in people that is seperate from the messages we're force fed in this culture. |
yes i agree with u it is offensive. a lot of times, we deal with such rude tones in society (of this type of comparison) because people become a cycle of emotional toilet buckets, when people just crap all over others and the cycle just goes round and round and people get used as a toilet bucket would be. but yeah, i find women who are mentally strong against that sort of programming u speak of to be very sexy... because it means they have a strong mind who can be a protective mother who can shield children from the bad influences of society.
umm... if i tell u where to find these women... are u going to join them???

White women would never have an interest in handsome or muscular men. They just end up in droves at the Geckos of Korea because the beer is good.
Oh please! |

Sure it is--it's part of the whole package. Just like a guy's nice car / good salary / six pack abs are part of the package.
Don't hate me for loving women--hate me for not loving you. |

Maybe you are right, but there are much better countries to go to if your primary interest is easy sex. |

OK- I'll bite.
I must say though, that out of all men, I find Caucasian men far and above the LEAST misogynistic and most respectful men. I have lived in Asia for 4 years, and have never been able to wear a tank top without having dirty old (and young!) Asians stare at me as if I was walking around naked. I never had a staring problem in North America, nor did I ever come across any disrespect. I cannot say the same for all the other place I've been to.
But anyway...from anecdotal evidence.
NEW ZEALAND!

Lucky you. I can't walk down the street without getting it. At least that's been the case everywhere I've gone in NA so far. And I would really only consider myself slightly above average at my absolute best. I haven't been to Asia yet... so I'll get back to you in a couple of months with my own observation. Surely it doesn't actually get worse? |

Staring can get annoying. Like Chloe I get it "at home" too. It's really aggravating to the point where you would rather go grocery shopping with your friends or roommates which is what a lot of people here do. It's especially aggravating to anyone with any degree of independence.
But then again, I live right by FL, and that explains a lot. I'm relocating as soon as I get the money, it's even more aggravating than South Korea as far as the amount of starage. At least in Korea, people will say something to you. |

is being shot worse than a papercut?
it does get worse. at least westeners have the decency to avert their eyes once you catch them looking- these barbarians just
keep.
on.
staring.
And even if you stare them in the eyes, they will just keep looking at you. It's kind of like you're a wall or some sort of painting. No shame, these pervs.
it is by and large, my biggest pet peeve in asia. the older men really are cultureless barbarians. And now in Singapore...nothing warms my heart morethan having my T&A ravaged by the eyes of some 3-D Bangledeshi for the 10 minutes it takes me to walk down the street.
With my fiance.
In jeans and a t-shirt.
ARGH! I CAN'T WAIT TO LEAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
