What are you going to do with the cat when you leave Korea?

If you have any doubts as to whether or not you'd take it with you, don't get one.

Well, I've been living here since 2002, I've just got engaged, and plan to stay here until my children, have none at the mo, and plan for some wayyy down the line, are primary school age.

And even then, it goes without saying that they would come me.

Good on ya. Too bad most ESL'ers who get cats here in Korea don't plan that far ahead.

I'm caring for a couple of cats right now while my friends are on vacation. I think it really depends on the critter.

Cat A-- about a year old, very playful and affectionate. Is living at my apartment, and has kept it in a state of hideous disarray and wreckage. Madly in love with me, I think. Can't *wait* for me to get up in the morning, and tries to make that happen as early as possible with louding meowing and moaning. When I leave for an hour or so, I come home to an ecstatic reception... running over to see me, purring, the whole bit.

Cat B-- I visit this cat's house, and when I come in once a day, I get a sniff and the privilege of rubbing its belly for a bit, then it saunters off. I pop in a movie, and visit it occasionally as it sits in the back room. It can't be bothered to hang out in the front room where the DVD player is.

I'd be fine with leaving cats alone overnight, or maybe two, but I'd worry about leaving them longer.

By the way, someone mentioned having a rabbit as a pet. A few caveats:

Rabbits who hop around freely can be EXTREMELY destructive. Just one curious nibble, and there goes your headphones, there goes your internet connection. It'll bite holes in your clothes and your blankets, and gnaw your books... it's amazing what they will sink their teeth into.

Rabbits who aren't fixed can be pretty territorial, and the rabbit I had LOVED to pee on my bed and spray me with some weird substance she flung with a flying kick-flip. I would have had her fixed, but it's hard to find a vet in Korea with experience with rabbits.

Oooooooookay, I understand. Thanks for that.

Y'know, I think the whole keeping-a-cat thing might just be possible. It won't be for a while yet, though; the missus and I live in a no-pets place but we're moving in the near future, so a cat is definitely not out of the question.

Meanwhile, here's a recent pic of a neighbourhood moggy. I was watching him* for ages. He was snoozing, but then a bug of some sort disturbed his reverie and he flew into a rage.
(*Gender assumed. Never actually been up close to the beast, but it seems like a boy to me.)

To agree with kermo, rabbits are not ideal pets for small apartments. They will destroy everything you've ever held dear, and possibly electrocute themselves in the process.

They are adorable, and quite affectionate, but I would honestly say that proper care of a rabbit is more taxing than a cat. Rabbits can be kept in cages for a portion of the day if you're at work or something, but they need a couple of hours of free running time or they'll get fat and crazy. They'll also try to "dig" up your carpet or hard word floor, which is primarily to wear down their nails. And they don't live as long as cats or dogs.

That being said, rabbits are really fun. They're a lot smarter than you'd expect, and it is possible to litterbox train them. When they're young, they'll play similar to the way that cats do...they'll pounce on things, chew them, and throw them around.
