Why is it that Canadians seem to go so crazy about China, and pay it homage as if it's some great foreign god they can cheer on towards the defeat of the big, bad, evil capitalist USA?

Seriously, to hear some of my Canadian neighbors talk, it's almost as if they're ready to bow down at the feet of the Chinese. I often hear them praising China's name as, to use a Canadian friend's words, "the world's next great superpower."

They do it with some eery gleem of excitement in their eyes.

What exactly is the motivation behind this, and what does Canada have to gain from it?

If China crushed the US, then Canada would be flooded with Americans, Mexicans, Central and South Americans. I don't think they'd like that.

China could be a super power. I don't get why there isn't a push to learn Chinese in schools. India is also a country to watch.

I didn't know they did...but if they did, I would imagine its because after Anglos and French, Chinese make up the 3rd largest ethnic group within Canada.

I've never heard a fellow Canada prop up China in this manner. Of course, I deal primarily with Canadians in Canada. Perhaps they drink a special brand of punch while in the air and land with a rich adoration for all things China?

If China crushed the USA literally and began to control the USA, soon Canadians would be complaining about China the way they currently complain about the USA... because they'd be China's byatch instead of the USA's byatch.

I live in China.

I am Canadian.

Before I moved to China, my heart was closer to China than America.

Now, having been in China for almost 4 years, I find myself closer in heart to America than China.

Maybe your Canadian neighbours need to spend some time in China.

China is a bubble that will pop. Should any of you want to learn about the severity of the problems in that country, google "china+bubble". And when the bubble pops, the biggest challenge facing the CCP will be keeping the country together. Taiwan is only one of several seperatist movements in the country.

First, an article about why the information coming out of China is so poor:

And here is one from Macleans about how virtually every single Canadian company in China is losing hordes of money and being defrauded at every turn.

Sorry, I've been away.

I should have been more specific. I didn't mean to generalize that all Canadians thought this. Just had coversations with a neighbor and overheard a few others over the past year or so that have talked of China in this way.

It just feels like they're excited China may one day surpass the USA. As if that's some goal they hope to see some country reach, for reasons I don't understand.

It just seemed so odd that they would act so excited about China doing this.

Ain't gonna happen in your lifetime. Economically, China is still not at the level of Japan, nevermind the EU or the US. Militarily, it's not yet near Russia, nevermind the USA, nevermind even more the NATO combined forces.

America sucks right now under Herr Bush, but even most liberals I know can see that the Chinese government is just, if not more, corrupt.
