Check back a page or so; there was a thread about a month ago. This forum is lightly used. I'm going in September.

I spent 4 weeks in Mongolia from June 10 to July 10, 2007. Fantastic country, & I'd def go back. UB had decent food. But UB had awful traffic & was a boring town. Only the Tibetan Lama Temple & Square were worth seeing. Loved the Gobi, Terelj & Khovsgol / White Lakes.

Didn't have time or funds for Altai.

You can get a roundtrip ticket much cheaper if you fly out of Cheongju. The good thing is, the return flight will take you to Incheon.

How easy is it to get around the country if one is in UB? By train I assume. Also, are those places doable if I'm only there for a week? I wasn't planning on stopping in Mongolia but since it costs only about $20 extra to do so I figured I might as well. What would you recommend to do first?

I hooked up with a tour and traveled from UB headed south towards the Sand dunes and headed back up to UB. I just made a thread with some of my pictures while I was there. It's also a general time line from day 1-7. If you want to see a lot in a week plan on either taking trains or bouncing up and down in a Russian minivan.

If you're only in Mongolia for a week, take either the Gobi or Khovsgol tour with OTAM (Open tour around Mongolia). They have a website & it's 6 days / 5 nights for $123 US. I preferrred the Gobi. Did both plus Terelj. The only trains of note are from Beijing to UB, & UB to Irkutsk / TSR in Russia. Public transport in Mongolia is poor.
