I couldn't help it, but the Incheon Airport thread made me do it...

Here is my list:

1. Hong Kong (nothing comes remotely close -- simply the best in the world)
2. Incheon (solid at number two)
3. Tokyo Haneda (Asia's busiest airport)
4. Heathrow (only because it's so damn busy and cool to watch the planes take off and land from there)
5. JFK (hometown airport and airtrain is awesome and newer terminals rank right up there with the best of them)
6. Osaka Kansai (very modern)
7. Calgary International (clean, modern and efficient. Friendly staff)
8. Hartsfield Atlanta (only because it's by far the busiest airport in the world and it's incredible how it handles that much traffic)
9. LAX (cool place to watch planes take off and land)
10. Munich (best airport in Europe, by far. Very efficient and modern. Much, much better than Frankfurt's)

Airports I want to see:

1. Singapore
2. Bangkok
3. KLIA
4. Sydney
5. Dubai (which I hear is really amazing)
6. Madrid (I haven't seen the new terminal, which I hear is massive. I've seen the old terminal which SUCKED)

You'd have to say that the best airports in the world in terms of functionality and efficiency would be in Asia. We really lag behind in North America and European airports are getting too old.

Any one with less than 5 gates, a 20-minute commute to the city centre, and a 45-minute check-in time.

Sorry, but I think that JFK is a nightmare. Maybe if you are only traveling international and don't have to change terminals, it may be okay, but once I am inside a terminal, from an arriving domestic flight, I don't expect to have to go outside (in freezing rain last January!) to get public transportation to a terminal stops away, and then have to go back outside!

Oh, I have more complaints about JFK, but I'll leave it at that.

The most unfriendly has to be O'Hare. Nasty, huge, barking immigration agents, and most everyone else equally dyspeptic.

The new airport in Bangkok is good in a lot of ways, but it is too far from town, and it is shoddily constructed.

I like KL and Incheon.

Delhi's airport feels like a 50's noir film.

Public transportation to change terminals? Sorry, but I have to call you out on that one. The airtrain is not public transportation and it's free. All the stations are inside too. Airtrain has been around for about three years and nobody takes a bus to switch terminals anymore.

I guess I called the airtrain public transport because it leaves the airport for other city destinations. I do know it is free in the airport. Yes, you do have to go outside to go from international to domestic and vice versa. I had to going and coming from BKK this year. I am sure it is not for all terminals, but flying to and from Florida on Jet Blue put me out in the cold in both directions.

ooh, i like this topic.

my favorites, in no particular order:
hong kong

incheon

fukuoka (surprised nobody mentioned it - everybody on this board has been there.) for one thing, its code is F*U*K, which is pretty awesome. plus, i love the semi-outdoor tarmac viewing area in the international terminal, and the fact that one can buy asahi cans at the stores for like 150 yen.

copenhagen - clean, modern, lots of smoking areas, and like 15 minutes from the city center

ohare - i know, everybody hates it, but i lived in chicago for a long time, so it wasn't a stressful transfer point, it was home. plus, i could get there from home for a $2 train ride and fly direct to most anywhere in the world.

kci - only airport in the u.s. where it's possible to show up 5 minutes before your flight and make it.

airports i could do without - LAX, vegas, seatac, tampa, paris CDG, phoenix, baltimore

i fly into bkk for the first time next week!

yeah. JFK isn't that good. Airtrain is 5 bucks to subway and LI raliway. Not cheap.

Airports I like:

Singapore: immigration has always been a breeze. Don't wait long for baggage. Free internet everywhere, movie theatre, restaurants, etc. Had to spend hours there in July, not bad.

Hong Kong: not quite as many facilities as SIN but close. Also had to spend 4 hours here in July. train to city center is awesome.

ICN

SFO- intl terminal only. Domestic kinda blows.

San Diego- Very close to downtown. Flies right over the city, best approach I know of. Small and easy to get around.

Airports that suck

Delhi- ugly and aging quickly.

Dhaka- dirty, ugly, and falling apart in some spots.

Sanaa- most uncomfortable seats i've found in an airport

Hong Kong was the nicest as far as stuff to see and do. It is also quite efficient considering its size and flight volume. I really liked Hanoi's airport as it was very efficient and quick in and out. Don Muang in Bangkok was easy not so sure about the new one.

Worst airport must be CKS in Taipei, it is slow, and oh so boring. a depressing place.
