I still have half my airfare coming and of course my bonus. Am I entitled to the bonus now, or do I have to wait until I finish with this employer? And what about the 2nd year airfare? He mentioned paying for a visa run, but I think not that is not even necessary now under the new rules for staying with the same employer. The school isn't doing very well and I think he is thinking this is the cheapest option for him versus getting a new teacher. But he has never been late paying me and he doesn't seem worried about the drop in enrollment.

You should make sure to get your first year severence at the end of this year if you think there are any money problems.... I think you can wait until the end and get every year's severence at your last year salary, but that could also mean getting really screwed.... As for the airfare, I'd try to make a deal with him for a certain amount of cash (especially if you don't have to do the visa run -- which you shouldn't)... I think the going rate for cash reembursement is somewhere between 500-700 one way.... Someone else can chime in here.... So I would ask for somewhere between 1-1.5 mil for the flights you aren't taking.... If he says he doesn't have the cash, you could negotiate to have it paid out over the course of the year (maybe an extra 100,000 per month.... But he should still be responsible for your flight home at the end....
Things you should insist on:
At least a 100,000 raise per month....
Cash rate for the return flight from this year and the coming flight for next year or a roundtrip ticket for your vacation to wherever in Asia you chose to go if you actually get vacation... |

You are correct in your thinking that a visa run is not necessary for an extension with the same employer. It is 30k won, an application and some paperwork down at the local immigration office.
In regards to staying, have your old contract including airfare and severance paid out in cash in FULL as part of your agreement to stay on.
No payout = no staying.
Far too many people lose out on the airfare due to a clause in the contract that says the employer only pays at the END of your job and not if you extend.
A hakwon that has falling enrollment is also not a good place to entrust your severance. Get it paid out so you don't lose it or have to fight for it later.

Thanks for the advise from both of you. I have come to an agreement with my employer that I am satisfied with. Your input was very helpful. |
