Well, I can get an HP printer before I come to Korea for about $80, plus cartridges are pretty cheap here in the U.S.. The nice thing is that the instructions will be in English (don't know Korean yet). Should I buy one before I come or wait until I get there? (Not interested in color printing, just b&w).
Thanks for your advice.

not sure where you are, but if you're in Canada, they're much cheaper in Korea.

Why would you want to haul that around? Most of the same printers are available in Korea. I bought an HP Laserjet for about the same price it would be NOT on sale in the US.

Where are you coming from? You'd likely need a transformer box for your printer if you're from NA.

What did you do? Did you haul a printer to Korea?

I can't imagine much of a price difference - 10-30 dollars at most. that's a bulky item with a possibility of breakage in flight. Better to bring books, music, comforts of home.

I agree, buy one here. It doesn't matter if you know Korean or not. I bought a new samsung color printer/scanner for 90,000 won a few months ago. Plus, if immigration sees your new printer, they will charge you tax on the value.

Actually, I did buy one when I got here (to Korea). It's a Canon PIXMA, and E-Mart had them on sale for 34,000 Won. Love it!

I see it is for sale at the EMart in town. Cheap too.

I presume it came with ink cartridges. How long did they last? How much do replacements cost?

I see there is no black ink cartridge so it prints black using color ink. Does text come out sharp?

I've done about 18 photographs (color 4x6) and tons of pages of black printing (trick is to set your preferences to greyscale and "fast" for black printing). I still haven't used the first cartridge yet. Text is very crisp. I've been very pleased with Canon printers in the past and feel the same way about this one. I've been using it for nearly a month now.

I bought a printer here in Korea (HP) and then downloaded English language instructions/manual from the internet. Printers cost about the same but I've found that cartridges are much cheaper!

Why the heck would you haul a printer all the way to Asia? That's like going to the USA and posting an ad saying, "should I stop my Mr. Kim's car lot in Daegu and pick up a Chevrolet before I move to Detroit?".

Even if you do bring one over, I'll bet you 5 bucks they will make you pay duty on it when you hit customs.

I hauled printers to Korea twice, with no duty.
