|
|
After the "pen beat" meme that spread like ebola among these kids (amazingly easy to exterminate if you break their pencil after a couple warnings), the other mystery was them all saying this deep throated "what?" I was wondering where that was coming from until last Saturday when I had some Korean Cavalcade of Comedy show on the TV. It always features some guy who wears a dress and runs around on stage. This is comedy.
Anyway, there was this one trio and this one long haired guy, that was his signature line. He'd go "what?" No clue what the larger gag is about. Probably someone making the suggestion he should wear a dress.
Anyway, the show and some photos of the guy:

I showed some of my kids parkour videos and tried to convince them this should be the next craze. Don't think it worked though. |

That whole 'what' thing was Korean kids copying a Korean that had copied Dave Chapelle's Lil Jon skit.
They even copied 'copy' for their word for coffee, namely 'copy'. |

"What annoys me. Regardless of the comedy or not, it seems about the same as it has been for 2 years. That being said, 1st offense I give a warning, 2nd they write "What" 100 times, 3rd time I have them write a sentence 100 times with the word "what" in it at least four times. 4th time they write "what" 1000 times. . .never hit 5 yet.

Strange. My students have pass their "WHAAAT?!" phase about a year ago and have now officially entered the "Huulll" phase. I guess it's some internet/text message term meaning a disgusted "whatever". |

I think that we should all push for a parkour craze.
It would be ace to see all the students scalling the outside of the school and jumping off it.
Parkour is the way to go. |

When I first came here, there was a video game which said, "You want a piece of meat, boy?"
One of my students copied that. |

That was old. If you want to play along just yell "Oh ya" everytime they say it. They are speaking English. What's the problem. If they are being disruptive...force them to use what properly.
Get a really boring lesson involving "what'.
When they say it...bore the hell out of them. |

Where do the Korean people get "O my God"?
I have even heard adults say that.
And I have even heard pious people, whom one would not expect to use God's name in vain, say that. |

Like every single thing K-kids do. From the slap-stick Gag shows on TV. Kinda sad really how they can't actually do or say anything funny from their own brains, but simply mimicking these shows is hilarious to them. Whatever. |

I thought it was "shut up mouth."
Where do they get "shut up, Malfoy?"
Is there anywhere in the Harry Potter movies where someone says that? |
