through months of research and interviews I have finally narrowed down the 5 stereotyopes of english teachers in korea
most people are not just one but a combination of many

What are you ?
Please feel free to add more stereotypes you have discovered

The frat boy/girl

Here for the party .Cant let go of those glorious pie gamma delta pie days . Can be found at boreyoung mud festival, burger king and playing soju pong at the back of the bar .Tends to be a pack animal , displays a dislike for korean culture ,intermitently makes strange whooping noises . Frat girls show symptoms of sexual agitation as their male counterparts ae more focused on the more appealing korean girl .

The teacher

Often has some education qualification or a hope of getting one.Can be seen on her day off taking the whole hagwon to the park . Brags of having taught her 7 year olds how to read the iliad .Spends saturday night in laminating flash cards and watching dead poets society. dress sense is usually questionable .

The traveller

has often spent years abroad in different countries before korea . Is very interested in learning korean . Wants to be immersed in korean society .Can be found in temples and kimchi museums .Is very camera happy . Plans to save wages to travel mongolia by donkey . Usually Canadian.

The old pervert

Can be seen with young nymph like asian beauties at least half his age , usually shipped in from thailand or the phillipenes.Maybe the wizdom of age and the fresh energy of youth combine to create a harmony but hes probably just a creepy perv . Can be found in phillipino bars , favoured look is raincoat and beer brand t shirt . Wouldnt get a job working with children at home .

The fugitive

A bit of a dark horse . Maybe has had difficulty in employment at home or fancies career change or is running from the law . Comes in a lot of shapes and sizes and often keeps to themselves

I've seen lists like these for expats, teachere, etc. I'm pretty much against them. It's a bit of a tired device and not really helpful to understanding people.

Someone should make a list about the various psychologies of people who feel the need to make inane lists.

i think you can add the "contemptuous debtor" to this list, as many people i come across are really only here for the money, and don't really enjoy korea so much as they enjoy their financial independence. you can probably find many of these people on the "how much longer do you have in korea" thread, or just daydreaming at work about their eventual move toward greener pastures.

I think a lot about how most expats move here because its a free ticket to travel the world, save money, pay off loans; earn money doing something you've been doing all your life...speaking English. How most of us are relocating ourselves across the world in the same way our parents, grandparents or greatgrandparents did. Maybe its easier for us because we're making more money than they did at first....my ancestors being penniless farmers from Italy and Eastern Europe. People made generalizations about them, had racist names for them, thought they were bleeding society dry, polluting the bloodlines. Maybe in the next generation a variety of people will reside in Korea without having to marry...maybe not. Are expats here restricted to these five types? What about the people immigrating from Southeast Asia? Do you guys think Korea will become more mixed? Would that be a good thing here or is it inevitable?

Why is it perverted to be attracted to 20 something women? Men are genetically driven to be attracted to the healthiest looking women, who, in most cases, are young.

jambosambo:

Funny stuff and not only a little kernel of truth in it all.

I would add:

6. The wannabe nihilist: cynical beyond recognition, an outcast in his own nation (although often by choice), usually but not always a leftist (sometimes a libertarian), loves to bad mouth his own country but wouldn't dream of turning in his passport, and an atheist who doesn't notice the irony of living in a country that has the same character traits they fled, only more pronounced.

7. The ex-military type: decided to teach and not having real credentials for the job stateside, stayed in Korea. Finds life in the Korean city a heck of a lot more interesting than the DMZ. Often very smart with lots of common sense and practical skills, but undereducated.

8. The missionary: who comes to convert only to be dismayed that Korean groups are trying to convert him to their particular denomination; eventually moves on to China to preach in their apartment after inviting students over. Sometimes a fairly good teacher who at least doesn't bad mouth his country.

indytrucks:

Viewed your photostream. Fantastic shots. Some are even breathtaking. Some among the best I've seen online in years.

Anyone reading this post, go to his flickr weblink.

Your daughter has exquisite eyes. This might sound silly, but she "looks" smart and sensitive and I say this as someone who usually avoids looking at anyone's baby photos. Thanks for sharing.
