does everyone have to surrender their own home country's drivers license to obtain a korean drivers license?
and following that, was anyone informed of a policy whereby periodically
(about every six months) the DL office will return the foreign licenses
they are holding at that time to the appropriate offices in the country
of origin.
when i asked at the office about this they said it was new procedures
from the transport ministry or whatever but she did not know if it's the
korean govts own idea or at the request other countries governments.
its seems to be a quite ridiculous, flawed, and pointless policy. so i
suppose inline with many korean bureaucratic procedures. |

It varies by country. If you are from the US you trade your license and take the written test and do the physical. If you want to keep your license then you have to take the driving test.
The paper they showed me said that I can get my US license back when I show them my plane ticket for leaving Korea. There was no mention of the six month rule.
I remember reading posts about the license being sent back to the US. I think they changed the policy after I and other people pointed out that we would not be able to legally drive from the airport when we returned home. It's silly but at least they don't destroy it. |
