Please help! I just adopted a cat and she's driving me mad! Her previous owner put her in a cage when he gave her to me and now when I go anywhere near her, she hisses, growls, and tries to scratch me! I can't feed her or change her litter! What should I do? I can't leave her cage in that state for long. And she's gotta eat, drink, and poop! *sigh* Any suggestions? Confused

Oh, open the cage and use gloves. if you don't have gloves, wrap a shirt around your hands.

The cat might do the same thing once its out but you gotta find out.

Ummm, problem is that I have a roommate who's very afraid of her in this state. So if I let her out, and she continues to act like this, then what? How will I get her back in the cage? I want to move the cage upstairs first and then try to let her out but...I can't get near the cage! *sigh* Is there anyone I can call to move her upstairs? Are there pet trainers in Korea?

Throw a blanket over the cage.

Feel tense about trying it but I guess it'll have to be done. Eek! Wish me luck! Thank you!

Just open the cage, set up a litter box and food dish, and give the cat its space. Don't go near it, don't look at it, just completely ignore it. Let it get comfortable. It'll come to you when it wants to mingle.

I agree with everything Qinella said. Once you let it out of its cage, it won't go looking for a fight. Most likely, it'll find a small space to hide in until it gets comfortable enough to explore.

Throw a blanket over the cage, take it upstairs to a room you've prepared for it (litter box, food dish, water--buy extras of each if need be). Make sure there is some furniture or something in there for the cat to hide under/sleep on etc. When you get in the room set the cage down but don't take the blanket completely off the cage leave the back of it covered. Uncover only where the door/enterance is. Open the door and walk out of the room. Shut the door and give the cat about 24 hours of peace. This means that you needed to have provided enough food before you brought it upstairs. After 24 hours or so open the door to the room and leave the cat alone. Check on the food/water/litter (basically see if it's still alive and functioning). Then leave the cat to come out and be socialable on its own. Cats are solitary by nature when they want attention they will come to you, don't force it, but make sure you show the cat that there is someone there to take care of it.

I saw the two happiest cats in Korea this week. A small momma caf and an even smaller daughter. Almost identical except for size. They were wearing collars and skeeping on a becnh near the owners store. A butcher shop

I offered to buy one and the lady darn near took a cleaver to me.

Spoken by a true cat person.

If I were stuck in a cage surrounded by strangers, I'd be really pissed too.

Once the cat realizes you aren't a threat, it'll relax. This will take time.

I adopted a cat a few months back and had the exact same problem... I brought him to my apartment by subway so he was really annoyed by the time I got him home. I set up food and water outside the spot that I opened the cage and let him out.

He immediately bolted and hid behind the toilet. He hissed at me whenever I tried to get close. I decided to let him explore in peace so I went for a walk. When I got back he was under my bed, which was a much nicer hiding place for him.

He hid under the bed for 2 days, and never ate even when I was out at work. On the third day he came to check me out and then went for some food. He took another day to come around fully, but since then he has been my best friend.

You need to let her out of the cage and let her get used to you. Once she realises that you are the source of her food she will start to play nice. She is just confused by the new people and the new surroundings. Being such an independent creature, she will also be somewhat annoyed at being locked up for so long.
