Hi all-

I have a friend back in the U.S. who just had a baby girl (back in late May). She also has a 5-year old son. I really want to get her a really cute, hanbok-type outfit for the little girl. It seems like a real hanbok might be more trouble than it's worth (getting it on and off), but any cute, traditional-motif clothing would be appreciated, I think. I may also just want to pick her up some cute outfits in general, if I can figure out sizing here- baby clothes in the U.S. are expensive!

I have seen kids' "traditional" toys and clothing in Insadong, but I always feel like the prices are marked up there (am I wrong)? Is there another place I should look? I also want to get some unique Korean toys for the boy. While I'm at it I need "Korean" gifts for family, so if anyone could recommend a place to one-stop-shop before heading out of Korea next weekend I'd appreciate it!

The best place to go would be a traditional market. Can't help you in Seoul. If you're anywhere near Daegu give me a PM.

Have you given Namdaemun market a thought? Should be able to get most stuff there.

In Seoul - Namdaemun. Lots of the places up by the baby clothes part of the market have them for 1year and up. Baby's first birthday they all wear hanbok.

In Suwon - Namun market. There are about 100 shops in the garment building that will sell you one off the rack or custom made to order (newborn to huge sizes). They are in the building next to the new tourist info place. Catch a number 11-1 bus from Anyang station or 3000 won for a taxi from Suwon station.

E-mart and Home Plus will roll them out (off the rack varieties) about a week or so before the Chuseok holiday as well.

I am sure there are some in Anyang too but I don't know where. Ask a K-co-teacher where to get one. Any wedding hall usually has a shop that does them or can refer you as well.

The gift shops on JeJu Island have some nice ensambles for around 30Kw in kids sizes.

There all some kind of brownish copperish color.

What about other traditional Korean toys for babies? A hanbok would be cute but since he isn't even born yet I might have to delay that present. I didn't realize they were designed for one-year-olds.

For the traditional-motif clothing, 아동 개량 한복 might be the keyword.

The above article mentions 종로 5가 광장 시장 (KwangJang Market in Jongno 5-ga in Seoul) as the mecca of hanbok shopping. So you know...

Oops, you might have left anyway. Hope you got what you wanted...

My sister just had a baby - and after talking to my teachers and korean friends (and visiting Dongdaemun) you can get a hanbok for a year old child.
The ones I was looking at were around 30 - 40,000 won.

I don't remember exactly where it was but I was on the bottom floor of one of the huge buildings near or next to Doota! That's where the maternity and baby clothes are.

I plan on going back around Christmas and buying/sending it then. Smile

Thanks for the responses! It's fine that they're late...I haven't left yet, but will leave on Sunday. I plan to do some shopping tomorrow and will take a look then- thanks!
