I saw Me, Mom and Morgentaler a few times when I lived in Canada's greatest city, Montreal. Great shows.

my friends and i are thinking off taking a mini keg up to hongdae and sit outside the clubs and drink...that way we still have the club atmosphere without the club price and with the added bonus of a beer bong. haha

Some Hongdae punks, about 10 of em, came into our cafe a few months back, scaring the heck out of my girlfriend with their tattoos, piercings, and gear. I was a bit surprised by her reaction, because my girlfriend also has a tattoo... I figured she would know better than to judge someone based on them having ink.

I was tmepted to play some Operation Ivy over our speakers, but we had other customers so I decided against it.

I wonder about some of these Korean punks as I see more and more of them around Seoul these days.

Are they more into it for the music, or just for the image? Seems like it is mostly a fashion thing, just my 'impressions' and 'observations'.

And what's up with that that Korean punk dude in HongDae that has the makeup on that gives him the black eye look? My advice to him?

If he wants to look grim and frostbitten and true KVLT, he should take his cues from Immortal, and not Raggedy Ann:

Hah, I wish I was registered on this board back when this thread was started. The picture in the OP was taken by me on January 24, 2004, at Skunk Hell's opening show. I got christ all for having it printed in Vice. The guy in the picture is the bassist from Couch.

All the Korean punks are in it for the music, and there is still a large percentage of Korean punks who are musicians in bands, which I think is a sign of a young punk scene. As it gets older there are people making zines, pressing CDs, or taking pictures.

Although the approach to punk fashion is sometimes very shallow, they are still aware of the substance underneath. Quite a few punks have given up all hopes of a decent future in normal society by what they're doing now, and that's what they want. That said, some of the bands like Caulk Rasher and Patients are a little too worked up over their image, and are filled with the rockstar ideal of "making it" which is just not going to happen (unless you're Crying Nut).

I think punks in Korea are much more aware of what punk means and the value of its history than a random sampling of Hot Topic mall punks you could gather up in America or Canada or England.

Are there any good spots for live music in Busan? Anything like punk, ska, or garage would be cool. There's a bit of an old fashioned garage scene in Japan I imagine with bands like the 5,6,7,8's, the Cougars, and thee out mods, any Japanese rock bands ever come down in this area for shows?

Sorry, you're pretty well screwed. There are occasional shows in a place called Moo Monk or something.

The only time bands really come to Busan is for festivals, like the recent Busan Rock Festival which had headliners LA Guns and Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra.

All this discussion of ska and nobody has bothered to break it down.

Here's the deal, bands like the Specials and Madness are 2Tone, which was the 2nd wave of ska, and almost entirely Brittish. Madness actually had very little ska-related music.

Bands like Operation Ivy and Against All Authority are ska-punk. They have almost nothing to do with ska, aside from that "dink-dink-dink" guitar mentioned earlier.

There are a lot of newer bands, worldwide, that play traditional-style ska, to a varying degree. The most popular and one of the best is the Slackers. Chris Murray and Hepcat are also really good.

But if you want to hear some original ska, which is Jamaican and from around 1962-1966, download the Trojan Ska and Trojan Ska II box sets. Anyone that claims that ska is goofy, annoying or too happy has obviously never heard real ska.

If you like 60s soul, forget ska. Just download the Trojan Rocksteady box set.

And if you think you don't like reggae, it's probably because you've only heard roots reggae, stuff like mid-70s Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Rasta-Ganja-Chant-Down-Babylon stuff. Not all reggae is like that.

Download the Trojan Revivie box set, Trojan Skinhead Reggae box set, or Skinhead Revolt.

I only recommend these box sets because I know they're easier to find and because you can't really give names with Jamaican music, since so many artists have recorded across so many genres and have a ton of terrible stuff.

This man knows his island music.

Were you around in March this year when the Slackers played in Seoul?

By the way, the band being discussed on the first page is Kingston Rudieska as I'm sure everyone's figured out by now. Their music is heavily inspired by bluebeat ska, not the later crap. If you got into ska-punk back in your frat-boy days, there are more than enough bands playing it here.

I did catch the Slackers. Great show, they I preferred them before they had Agent Jay, and when they had Q-Maxx (even though I never liked him, which I'm not really sure how that works).

I saw Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra at the Dadaepo International Music Festival in Busan a couple of weeks ago. I think that band you mentioned played as well, but I missed them.

There was a band playing in the crowd, all acoustic, with harmonica, acoustic bass, acoustic guitar, percussion, vocals, and two accordions. They were great. There's a picture of them on my FlickR:

I do like some ska-punk, but not much. OpIvy is great. Common Rider. And AAA.

But most...eh. It's terrible.
