Has anyone had any experience of moving belongings via a shipping container? I have some space in a friend's one and will be packing up mostly clothes, a few personal things and a bike. I will use boxes for the clothes. I think the container will take about a month to get to Australia.
Do I need to protect against damp or anything else?
Any tips would be appreciated.

We moved practically all of our household goods here by container. All we did was use regular moving boxes. The shipping company loaded the boxes and stuff like king size bed onto pallets. The bed and everything else was wrapped tightly with clear plastic wrap. Nothing got wet, lol. Razz

I heard an open bag of kitty litter helps with dampness, but then other shippers told me that's not necessary.

The container is sealed but expect the humidity to vary like air anywhere. Only an air conditioning system will keep the air dry. If the boat takes on water and the container is flooded then the kitty litter won't help.

I shipped all my possessions -- a huge amount of stuff, probably more than you have, for a total of $1,200 USD.

I went with these guys and they did a fine job. This was in December 2005.

Click on Freight Services and then Air Freight.

I know nothing about their service in Korea. They went through a third party carrier to get my stuff from Seoul to Busan. It definitely made me nervous but it worked out fine.

They picked up in San Francisco and dropped off in Busan, at Gimhae airport. I have never used them from Korea to the U.S. I can't say how that will turn out.

Air freight is the way to go. Forget the boat. Air freight doesn't cost much more and you will get it in three days rather than three months.

Expect immigration hassles.
