As some of you know, I am taking a break from teaching and working as a security guard in my hometown of New Haven,CT (I am doing this to be close and help out my family at the moment).....I just want to say this to set the mood for what I am going to write....

I was sitting in the guard station, talking to one of my friends on the phone when a man walked in, choking to death on a piece of candy. I acted quickly by doing patting the guy on the back. When I noticed that was not working, I did the Heimlich manuever, which sent the candy flying across the room. He was alittle disorientated, but ok.
To make sure, I also called 911 to get the guy checked out. He was breathing fine and I am now being hailed as a hero.

I can honestly say, this was the first time I ever acted in a way that saved a person's life.....

Wow, you could have video-d the event and sold it and made a bunch of money. Now you'll just be a security guard/hogwan teacher the rest of your life. Still feel good?

Come on! Don't you ever watch the movies!?!? While you "saving" this guy's life. His accomplices were probably breaking in and stealing something valuable.

Good for you for thinking fast. Can you explain exactly what we should do if we're ever in that situation? I mean, I'm sure I've read instructions on the Heimlich maneuver but I'm not sure if I'd remember them in an emergency. Did you get any special training in doing the Heimlich maneuver or did you just remember having read about it somewhere? (I've heard it can also be used on animals who are choking, but it's done a bit differently. I hope I never have to think about this, but in case I do I'd like to be prepared.)

Tony_Balony/jeffkim1972~~~ hahahahahahahaha........ Confused
I was more concerned with saving the person than fame, besides I would only get several hits a day if it were to be put on Youtube....plus, I work in an elderly community and the guy was 67 years old, unless his accomplices were trying to steal doses of geritol, I doubt they tried to use the situation to steal anything.

Bramble~~~ You put your thumb inside your four fingers and and place your other hand over that fist. and put the other end of the fist on the place where the diaphram is on a person and give one good thrust inand up, as if to force what was in the throat and stomach to come out.

The bad part is that the person can puke and some stomach acid can come up into the esophogus, but the object will be out of the person and they can breathe again.

How did I learn?
I am a child of the 80's, I was always seeing movies about the Heimlich maneuver in school and I always got evaluated on things like this during CTT training in the army.

Johndoe~~~Yep! I am also a member of the nationals guards too......hard to believe!...but I guess the greatest balancing act would be to pat my head and rub my tummy at the same time.....now that takes alot of focus and coordination........ Wink

i resuscitated a woman once. She had a panic attack and stopped breathing. I massaged her chest. (for want of a better word-.
She started breathing again with one almighty gasp.

Please do not hit anyone on the back who is choking as it can lodge the item further into their throat. That's one of the first things they tell you when you take a first aid class.
