| I decided to fly over. It's only a hundred bucks more and saves me like 14 hours in transit. I'm going to land in Osaka at 2 pm on Thursday and fly out on the following Thursday morning. Any new suggested itinaries (Just Because you seem knowledgeable)? |
Have you booked anything accomodation wise yet???
You will struggling to pick up anything cheap and good/clean.....
Plenty of business hotels but they will set you back minimum 70 000-80 000 a night....
same things to look at but use kyoto/osaka as your base....... |

I'm hoping to have some stuff booked today. This trip is so last minute, but I hope it all works out. |

Well, I'm not at a university either. I wish I got two weeks of for Chuseok.
But you know, it won't kill you if you don't see all the highlights. I'm not the most experienced traveler on these boards, but I've learned my lessons. You have more choices than the highlights or nothing. That's just MHO. |

| When I finished my contract, on 21 May, I won't be going back to work until 15 September at the earliest. In the meantime, I've spent 4 weeks in China (just 4 cities: Beijing, Tianjin, Taiyuan & Xian), Mongolia (4 weeks in UB, Terelj, Gobi Desert & Khovsgol,); & 3 weeks in Russia (Irkutsk, Listvianka, Bratsk, Severobaikalsk, Tynda, Kommsomolsk Na Amur, Khaborovsk & Vladivostok: 8 cities). I also had 2 weeks in Korea (2 cities), & have 4 weeks in Australia (1 city). Time is of the essence. Great if you have it, huffdaddy. Most of us don't. I hope the OP has a fantastic time in Japan. I did. |

| For anyone who's wondering, the trains around Japan are really easy to take and accomodation isn't really a problem, even on short notice. If worse comes to worse, you can do what we do in Seoul and just go to a Sauna. I definitely recommend Spa World in Osaka. It only costs about a man won to stay the night and enjoy the spa, plus they have beds and pajamas and shampoo and stuff. It's great for an early morning trip to the airport and right outside the subway. The subway attendent didn't even check my expired JR pass, so if you want a last cheap night in Osaka, it's the way to go. |

| I'm meeting a friend in Tokyo at the end of February. We don't want to spend too much time traveling, so we're going to start in Tokyo for a couple days, then head down to Kyoto. My friend flies out of Osaka and I'll be flying out of Tokyo a couple days after her. So my question is: is it worth getting the rail pass or should we just pay for each ride? Is the rail pass only good for trains or also subways? |

| Yes. The Japan rail pass is definitely worth purchasing, for Tokyo > Kyoto > Tokyo , before you arrive in Japan. It's not applicable to Tokyo or Osaka subways, but is good for any JR service, such as the boat to Miyajima. |
