Now, having been in China for almost 4 years, I find myself closer in heart to America than China.
Maybe your Canadian neighbours need to spend some time in China. |
Hey dude I remembered you from the old dave site.

Why is it that Canadians seem to go so crazy about China, and pay it homage as if it's some great foreign god they can cheer on towards the defeat of the big, bad, evil capitalist USA?
Seriously, to hear some of my Canadian neighbors talk, it's almost as if they're ready to bow down at the feet of the Chinese. I often hear them praising China's name as, to use a Canadian friend's words, "the world's next great superpower."
They do it with some eery gleem of excitement in their eyes.
What exactly is the motivation behind this, and what does Canada have to gain from it? |
I've never heard any of my friends think or say that. Maybe you should talk to new people. |

Ain't gonna happen in your lifetime. Economically, China is still not at the level of Japan, nevermind the EU or the US. Militarily, it's not yet near Russia, nevermind the USA, nevermind even more the NATO combined forces.
America sucks right now under Herr Bush, but even most liberals I know can see that the Chinese government is just, if not more, corrupt. |
Well, of course.. that's why i said, "IF". |

They don't. |

Are your Canadian neighbours Chinese-Canadians? |

Living in Canada, I'd have to say this is true, and it's the media that perpetuates it.
Not a day goes by that the Globe or the CBC is hyping China. And when it's reported that their toys are mad of lead, it's told with great solemnity. I'm not sure why. |

I don't see it as a distinctly Canadian problem. Rather, it is a trait of many educated, middle class Westerners to romanticise the gritty, exotic "alternative-ness" of regimes in which the rights and privileges they take for granted would amount to nothing.
Don't ask me why. |

| Agreed. To the extent that the OP was true, it's probably because those people have this idea that people in Asia sit around in kimonos (why kimonos? because that's what asians wear, right?) all day sipping tea from 5000 year old porcelain cups contemplating life's eternal questions such as which cherry blossom is perfect. |

I've only met one Canadian who proclaimed the PRC as saviors -- my aunt. The main reason was because she's a hippy and commie lover who never grew up and was easily impressed by the new (but empty) buildings in Shanghai. She was visiting her cousin who used to teach English over there. When she came back from each visit, she couldn't stop salivating over how "wonderful" and "lovely" those Chinese people are.
As for her cousin, she left after three years because her school screwed her over her contract and she got sick from the pollution. She, who lived there, didn't like China so much, but she couldn't find a decent job in Vancouver and that's why she went there.
Aside from that, I've never met any other Canadian who felt this way. Maybe some Chinese-Canadians (if they even consider themselves Canadians), but I think it's because the PRC makes a huge effort to reach out to them. |

Nah, I don't think that would happen because the Americans could all escape by flying away on their unicorns. |

Never happen. China is one of the most capitalistic countries in the world. They need the U.S. - it's a HUGE market for Chinese good. |
