i think one thing that is crucial to mention about the korean punk scene is that it is so young.
once bands and musicians get a chance to mature, it may be different, but at this point i have a feeling that all bands are just cutting their teeth.
in that, there are a few bands that do "this type" or "that type" of music well. a lot of it is a ripoff, a lot of it is anachronism... but lots of it is fucking good.
a more responsible music listener would go out and support it and help it develop rather than whining about it. |

I can't stand ska-punk, but I gave Ska Sucks a chance and let them open for the Slackers. They've been doing well since. I don't even like Op Ivy and Sublime. It's just rock with horns (which is what a lot of ska-punk bands started calling themselves once the ska-punk trend ended).
The music I prefer is the skinhead reggae music you mentioned, particularly the Dancehall '69 compilation. It's heavy on keyboards and organ effects, and the vocals are often just a drunk guy yelling stuff at the crowd.
The band you're describing with the accordions and stuff sounds to me like Crying Nut. They're a pretty big band that started as a typical Hongdae punk band (albeit one of the first) and is now a household name. The acoustic ska band you saw looks like Kingston Rudieska with the Crying Nut guy who sometimes plays keyboard for them.
Agent Jay was the quiet one of the group but he turned out to be very friendly. It seems like all the band was happy to get rid of Q-Maxx, who apparently knocked up a Japanese girl and lives there now.
Who'd you come up with to see the Slackers? I met a bunch of people from Busan but only remembered a few. I met Sarah and her twin sister who I'm planning to visit next weekend in Busan, as well as a couple from Geoje who were with a big group. |
I never liked Q-Maxx, really. But since he's gone the band made their worst album. And Agent Jay is good, but he's too good. His solos do not fit the band's style. Too many blues licks.
Yeah, I think you and I talked at the show. I was the short guy with Melissa, the short girl. We were with the people from Geoje and some more Busanians.
I was in an instrumental reggae group before coming to Korea. We have some songs up at

Yeah, I think I remember you and hearing some of those songs before. I haven't heard from Melissa in a long time. It seems like her myspace account evaporated. |

It DID!
She decided to break free from MySpace...until about two weeks ago. I think she was MIA for about three months.
So she's back now. You can find her on my top friends list (can that be said WITHOUT sounding like a jackoff?)
