Ahh, come on. If everyone believed the same things life would be boring. Language and food are destined to be the only things of 'culture' left in the world... sad.

except when there are real deaths involved. This isn't just cultural...it's like clitorectomies: an idiotic, unnecessary (not mentioned in the Quran) tribal practice that leads to death, infertility, and at the very least the complete loss of sexual pleasure.

Again, I really wish fan death was this stupid thing like how your mother tells you that cold weather will give you a cold, but there are some sad aspects under the surface.

Cultural relativity is not relativity applied to the study of culture.

In the past many people were "overcome by vertigo" when standing near windows, on roofs, or on balconies.

Nor is it mentioned in the Bible. Let's not forget that Christians in those areas also practice that ridiculous rite.

Thought this would clear things up. Here's a KBS news report debunking fan death so you can convince all your Korean friends who still believe in this silly myth.

You gotta watch it for the scientific experiment alone!

Randi's man in Korea Smile

From the Koreabeat site:

Quote:
<interview> Lee Yun-seong (professor of medical law at Seoul National University) : In most situations the person died of some other cause and people just happen to come across a switched-on fan. The autopsy cant find the real cause of death, and the fan seems like maybe it could be the reason so its mistaken as the real cause.

I'm disturbed by that last sentence. Now, I've always assumed that fan death was a media creation. The person pronouncing the cause of death isn't the medical examiner but a cop or a family member. But Xenu help Korea if their forensic examiners really believe in fan death.

Quote:
With only the power of my desperation I turned off the fan and I could finally take nice, deep breaths. I felt like I had pulled myself back from the gates of Hell itself.

A heroic struggle! Everything but a white whale. Goodness.

Absolutely not. If anything, the fan would blow away the CO2 and cycle in fresh air for the sleeper to breathe. I think the KBS article proved this.

I keep trying to think of the North American equivalent of Fan Death. Something widely held. Believed by intelligent people, even members of the medical community, but lacks biological plausibility.

Best I can come up with is power lines (and sadly a growing number of parents who think vaccinations are behind a range of illnesses). Despite excellent research showing power lines are safe, people to this day still believe they are dangerous and refuse to buy homes near them.

http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/emf.html

My mom is visiting, and she told me one of her friends believes it's dangerous to use a cell phone in an elevator because of electromagnetism. And of course there's the belief that cell phones cause brain cancer.

As to what could be an equivalent belief to fan death, here are my two suggestions:
1) Going swimming less than 30 minutes after eating gives you a stomach ache.
2) Sitting too close to the TV makes you blind.
Honestly either of these could be true as far as I know, but we all pretty well take them for granted. Maybe a Korean would be weirded out if they encountered either of these.
