Hahaha

At first, I wasn't terribly surprised. After all, I was in Korea. One expects a language barrier. What I would soon discover is that Everland is a theme park veritably dedicated to the worship of all things American and those things perceived to be American.

None of these things, unfortunately, included the language spoken in America.

There is something fishy about that article. Every Korean under the age of 82 knows the word 'hotel'. No doubt the guy walked up the the woman in white gloves and rattled off a sentence at full speed, complete with idioms and slang.

You have noticed that some Koreans shut off and flip out as soon as whitey starts speaking to them, right?

They have announcements in Korean and English (some in Chinese too). One announcement says if you are looking for someone, a kid or parent or whoever, go to the 3rd floor.

"Yes, I'm looking for my friend Francis." Do they actually have someone there who can deal with that in English? I'm curious.

Yes, I've noticed that, but it has never taken me an HOUR to calm one down and get across the idea of 'hotel'.

Well then just attribute it to good old fashioned American journalism I guess, and let's leave it at that.

Actually, I'd attribute it to a drama queen.

I agree with Ya-Ta Boy. All the guy had to do was say "hotel" a few times and he would've been fine.

The writer embodies white privilege. He goes over to the middle of some Asian country and expects people making a buck an hour to understand English just because the theme park features a lot of English in its design. Clearly, he has not noticed the t-shirts people wear here.

Not much information in the review about the theme park itself. He points out how Everland rips off Disney World, but it doesn't leave the reader with the kind of information you'd expect to have after reading "travel coverage".

They know the word hotel. They just don't know what to do after that.

When I need oil for my motor scooter I say oil and usually this works. At the last gas station I was at I said oil, I pointed at oil in my dictionary. I'm at a gas station that sells oil. I just bought gas. 2-stroke engines need oil to go with the gas. The guy just wasn't figuring it out. Fortunately the woman there figured it out.

Unfortunately, he doesn't do the stereotypes that people hold of Americans any good. Not the smartest kid of the litter.

And then there's Global Village, a slow-going indoor boat trip past animated dolls representing the world's cultures.

Americans are depicted as football players and cheerleaders, while the South African dolls, painted black, rush the boats with spears. Although it's a crude rip-off of Disney's famous "It's a Small World," Jaesun tells me locals adore this version, and most school kids can sing its mind-numbing theme song.

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

That surprised me, but in all I didn't like the reviewer. He seemed to have to many negative preconceptions about Korea going in to form an unbiased piece.
