Is it just me or is there a different breed of foreigners residing in Iteawon and Hongdae areas?

Foreigners with different interests. Now you've got three stereotypes in your pack of Top Trumps; Koreans, foreigners not interested in drinking and Itaewon foreigners.

I don't think you can group all Hongdae foreigners together. 99% of all foreigners in Hongdae have nothing in common with me.

You mean the "Over 30" crowd in Itaewon vs the "fresh outta university" mob in Hongdae?

Or Hongdae's "I'm so bohemian" group vs Itaewon's "I feel so ghetto" group

Or maybe the "I love the hookers" sorts in Itaewon vs Hongdae's "I like the hooka" types.

Or the "I hate Korea and all Koreans!" philosophy of Itaewon vs the "Koreans are keen when they act like me!" philosophy of Hongdae.

...

This is all sort of the same, isn't it?

I lived in Hongdae for 5 years - until 2007, in fact - and it's a great place to live as long as you steer clear of the part down the hill that's become a sort of Kangnam/Itaewon mutant baby.

I'm thinking of moving from Seongnam to Itaewon because:
1. More central location
2. Cheap for Seoul
3. Shorter commute to work

Seem like good reasons to me...

Hongdae is in the northwest part of seoul, near Shinchon and by the Hongkik University subway stop on the green subway line.

I'm always wary of these kind of posts that try to draw distinctions between one type of people and another. I have noticed that Hongdae has basically opened up a mini-Itaewon inside itself with the tinpans and formerly route 66.

HongDae attracts many of the young artists from all over Korea. So you have art exhibitions everywhere for one. Everything art-related has a strong presense in HongDae.

In addition, its also very well-known for the best club scene in Korea. Most Koreans associate HongDae with 'clubbing'. Techno, hiphop, DJs, live music venues, etc. are all over HongDae.

One a month they also have CLUB DAY where for one fee, you can go into any of about 15 participating clubs.

Another day a month they have SOUND DAY where for one, you can go see as much different live music bands as you'd like to see.

In addition, there are five major universities in the area - Hongik University, Yonsei University, Sogang University, Myungji University and Ehwa Women's University.

Then on top of that, four of those universities have very famous and popular foreign language programs for non-Korean speakers to learn Korean.

So...all of those things combined, more or less make HongDae nearly a rival for foreigners attention and popularity right up there with Itaewon.

One last thing about HongDae...they also have foreign restaurants. As far as I know there are at least three Mexican restaurants, two Thai Restaurants, two Indian restaurants, two Greek restaurants, etc.
