I'm not sure about that:
One characteristic feature of Korean immigrants in the Philippines is their desire to stay together. Wherever Koreans move in large numbers they create their own enclaves, said Dr. Yoon, In-jin, the president of the Korean Migration Research Network and one of the leading scholars of Korean diaspora studies.
According to this scholar, the Korean community in Dumaguete is a closed group with very little interaction with the local people. Ms. Makil attributes this isolation to communications problems, as initially only very few immigrants know English, not to mention the local dialects. |

Yeah I agree that there's no need to worry about Filipinos taking our jobs, though what I'm concerned about is the work conditions for them here in Korea. Seems to me, hagwon owners only pay them around 1 mil a month. And considering the high cost of living in Korea, sounds like those Filipinos will either be living comfortably with no savings or are going to have to live an uncomfortable lifestyle in order to save money. |

Got this from some ESL site in the Philippines. Put a face to that anonymous Filipino who might "take your job" and read this (it seems that we Western esl teachers are much closer to our Filipino counterparts than me might imagine):
rach says
Hi Bob.
Personally, being a Filipino, I dont like the idea of Koreans flocking to our country. Ive been an English teacher to Koreans myself and the experience I gained from it is not very pleasant, to say the least. In fact it only left me a very negative impression of them.
Koreans are opportunistic people. (A majority of them) They come here to our country to use Filipinos knowledge of the English language but they have very little respect if none at all for Filipinos.
Filipino English teachers are TERRIBLY underpaid and mistreated by them. Both by Korean school owners and the students themselves. They can be very rude and demanding and think that they can get away with their disrespectful behavior just because Filipinos a very hospitable and civil.
Ive never been more nationalistic in my life until I realized how better off Filipinos are than Koreans. We may be poor but our manners are far better than theirs. I honestly wish that Koreans, and same is true with other foreigners, who do not respect Filipinos, leave our country. because a kind nation such as our do not deserve to be treated so inhumanely.
If only public schools here in the Philippines could support many Filipino English teachers I do honestly think that we would be better off teaching our own children. At least by that, Im sure something truly good would come out of it.

You can't blame koreans for screwing up things in The P.I.
You can only blame the Filipinos for allowing it to happen in THEIR country.
Filipinos allow it to happen. Why? And why let it continue? The P.I. people need to get their act together and make all foreigners get with the program after all. Can't blame the government either....they are elected by us after all. |

Here's a better question, if the American Rebels had never declared independence would North America and the world be a better place? |

Uh, no... if Britain had the resources of an unspoiled America and things went well I think we would see damn near world Colonialism under British rule.
Of course, I'm for dynamic and differing cultures so I would be opposed to this.
The world is not a worse off place because of America. In fact, I bet there would be a lot more struggling and 3rd world countries without it. American democratic principles (rooted in a lot of French and British and even back to Rome, etc) have revolutionized the world.
Granted, as I now think of it... the slave trade would have died off a lot sooner.
Anyway, this thread is about ignorant racist Koreans.
There are a lot of them. I'm sitting next to one right now, an assistant teacher. She just told me, "Philippines is dirty place people don't job work, not pretty."
Just like a Korean.
I responded, "Walk outside, take a big wiff of the air at the corner, then wait a short time until you see someone spit. After that, if you aren't too busy looking at yourself in the mirror... try looking for beauty on the inside and then when you find your dark soul and the hate within.... change or jump into the Han river."
She just said, "Buliyo" Or whatever the spelling is for I don't understand, sounds BUH-LIE-OH and then she stomped off disgusted. Oh well. |

I'm guessing she said "I don't know" And...You're asking a Korean woman to look for beauty on the ...inside? good luck with that one...
Yeah, it gets annoying when some Koreans dismiss Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, China, etc. as dirty, ugly places with "bad" people... talk about a superiority complex. Often they talk about how bad these places smell also... as if kimchee doesn't smell too! Ever walk into a subway car or bus here and just thought...oh my god, whats that smell?? |

And we can draw an immediate parrallel in a heartbeat. That sounds just too familiar here on Dave's. |

Perhaps the boom in the Phils is a short-term phenomenon. Manila might not like too many Koreans there, despite their investment and business, and could crack down on illegals and illegal activity (like any government should).
That said, Koreans DO improve many places where they move, especially the U.S. Say what you will, but many Filipinos live in dire poverty, and well, the opinion of ONE Filipino teacher cannot speak for the thousands of other Filipinos who might have a livelihood thanks to Korean investment. Of course, this is no excuse for poor behavior and rudeness on the part of Koreans, but let's not jump to conclusions based on a few grumblers.
When I go to the Phils, I tell them I'm from the U.S., and then when they get more inquisitive, I tell them I was born in Korea. Guess what? I got NO BAD SERVICE whatsoever. At a nightclub in Cebu, I picked up this Filipina who specifically looked for Korean guys. She told me all of these Korean songs she liked (and which I'd never heard of, I'm not a fan of K-pop) and several movies she had seen. |

Absolutely! America would be more like Canada. Well perhaps. |

I'm gonna follow this strain of the thread.
I've also been to the Philippines and told Filipinas that I'm am American living in South Korea. Guess what they are interested in. They ask me which Korean celebrities I've seen, is Korea really like it looks in the dramas, how do I say 'hello' in Korean, etc.
I have no doubt that people directly dealing with Koreans in the tourism and ESL industries have their frustrations. But young Filipinos on the whole, do seem to have a lot of interest in Korean film, K-pop, Korean popular culture, etc. |
