Very Happy

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all happy & healthy in this heat.

Say, I really want to go to opening ceremony at Summer Olympics in Beijing and am feeling a little frustrated. Any tips on tickets, packages, good deals on motels, or other options. I'm not trying to slum it, but I can't afford first class, either.

Any contacts, such as people you may know in Beijing or recommended travel agents w/Olympic packages would be greatly appreciated.

I looked on the Website and it seems like I had to have an address in China to buy tickets. Am I just a stonehead?

Thanks very much.

The ticketing phase is in the lottery phase now. If you don't have your name in for the opening ceremonies already you might be too late. The first come first serve tickets start in September sometime. A certain percentage are reserved for Chinese residents. They are expensive though. The cheapest tickets are over US$300.

Also, its my understanding that you have to contact the Olympic Committee of your home country to get in on some of this. I'd agree with the previous poster that you're probably too late for the opening ceremonies, and it'll be the busiest time anyway (besides, perhaps the closing ceremonies). I'm aiming for the middle. Diving, indoor cyling, and all watercraft events (rowing, canoeing, kayaking) will probably be cheap and available. Not to mention super fun!

Another option would be to volunteer. That way you might be able to see some stuff for free. You'd still need accomodations, but it'll get you into some things, maybe even the Olympic village.

Good Luck!

i have been doing a lot of research onthis also, as i plan to go after my contract here ends. It seems that you have to get the tickets from your home country - I had a Chinese citizen check this out for me. Through the company dealing with it in NZ you can request packages at teh moment but not individual event tickets. Im sure you would have better luck getting tickets if you are not a NZer though.

Apparently you can buy tickets online, but they will mail the tickets out 2 weeks before the event, which may make it difficult to get them from your home country to Korea in time, unless you trust Korean post:

As a rule your tickets will be dispatched 2 weeks prior to the event date. If there are exceptional circumstances, you will be notified by separate e-mail.

Several events available for under $200, but if you plan to stay a few days it could be an expensive trip!

I'm looking at the weight-lifting for no real reason than there seems to be a fair few tickets available and I think it'd be a lot of fun, although the slots seems to be for two or two and half hours. Seems pretty cheap as well. Although I'm not too keen on the mailing out shortly before the games starts. Will have to look a bit harder at this.
