The last time I took the train from Shanghai to Beijing it was about 140 rmb and the trip took about 12 hours. Take the overnight train and get a sleeper if availabel, but it will cost a little more too. I heard there was a "fast" train that only took 9 hours, but I don't know the cost. Of course that was 5 years ago too, so my info is a little dated. |

And if you do get the sleeper train, make she you get the middle or the upper bunk. Before everyone wants to go to sleep they use the bottom bunk as a public bench whether it's theres or not. I saw one guy wiping the contents of his nose on the sheets of the bed and later on retiring to his crisp clean sheets further down the car. |

1st class costs about 55,000 won
2nd class about 35,000 won.
Took 1st class going to Beijing(2 months ago), 2nd class going back because there were no tickets. It's worth the extra 20k for 1st class IMO.
Takes 12 hours but as it's overnight it's not so bad. |

I too the Z-train (Maybe that's it's name) from Shanghai to Beijing and it was great. Get the soft sleeper. The soft sleeper sleeps 4 rather than the hard sleeper's 6. Sorry if I get this a bit wrong but it was a couple of years ago. The meals served in the compartment were not too good but not too bad either. You'll want to bring some food. The overnight trip is great but then again you can't see the countryside out the windows. |
