If you've got an international or Korean license, definitely rent a car. The best thing is to just circle the island and get out of Jeju City which isn't that different from the mainland. If you manage to get a rental car, they give you this handy guidebook that has all of the GPS locations pre-coded so you just punch in the code and it'll set the directions for you.
If you can't get a rental car, I guess you'll have to use shuttle buses/taxis. Still though, try and get out of the main city and into the smaller hick towns. I'd recommend:
Marado (Mara Island) - the southernmost island of Korean territory. Not amazing or anything, but kind of peaceful because it feels so isolated.
Hallasan - Save it for the last say of your trip as it's a bit of a hike. Actually managed to see some deer there.
Seogwipo - Second biggest city. On the south east corner of the island. I regret not getting to the scuba place down there run by some German expat.
Udo - Out on the east coast. Another small island that has a really peaceful, isolated feeling. Also had a small beach on its east coast that had 4 other people on it. Great find!
Manjang Caves - These large lava tube caves. Kind of interesting and amazingly cool air is nice after hiking all over the island.
Temples - I can't even recall how many temples or their names I went to, but I find them one of the more interesting things in Korea. Not a Buddhist or anything, but some of them are quite peaceful, more so in Jeju.
*** I can't recommend strongly enough how much nicer it was to have a car though. The traffic on Jeju (outside of Jeju city) is absolutely tame and civilized for the most part. Also, the car will just give you so much more freedom for time and distance than a bus or taxi. *** |

Cheers for the tips
Cars not gonna happen, we were wondering where to set up shop in order to be on a good beach, or close to more attractions? |

I just visited seogwipo and found it to be great. It was peaceful with little traffic (except in the shopping area), and did not feel like a city at all. The people were friendly and it was an all-round relaxing experience.
You can rent scooters there with minimal fuss if you want to get away, and there are plenty of attractions within a short distance. |

Get a cheap yogwan in Sogwipo. There a few nice waterfalls arround there. You can also get a ferry to circle the Island. There is a nice beach nearby. Just get into a taxi and ask to go to the Hilton. |

Even better than Seogwipo is Jungmun beach, not to far away. I think there's a bus from Seogwipo to Jungmun, however.. maybe 30 minutes. Maybe take a taxi; they're all over the island and not too expensive. At Jungmun, there's a huge temple (where they filmed the beginning of "d war," no less), the best beach on the island, the Africa museum that is somewhat interesting, and a large convention center with a nice restaurant and interesting inter-cultural stuff for sale. Also, there's a famous set of 3 waterfalls in a nice park there you can see that is pretty cool.
Other than that, if you have time, hit Seongsan, 1/4 of the way around the island. If you like hiking, definitely go to "yeonsil" and hike to the top of halla san. |

Cheers for everything so far, its proper.
Got 3 days/5 nights there so I think if we take bits and bobs from the above we'll be fine. But any other suggestions keep them coming.
Ive not ridden a scooter before, is it a death trap? |

All I've heard is the weather sucks and everything is too overcrowded. So its like taking a vacation in a Seoul subway car. |

advice: have low expectations, you will be better of that way |

Yeah, you are right about the weather if you mean 'annually'. But the weather is nice (only) in late July, August, September, and the beginning of October.
Some places are crowded to the core... but by now (mid-August), the crowds have diminished as all the lemmings who get vacation from work in Seoul at exactly the same time -- late July to mid-August -- have gone home.
Jeju is a crappy place to live. It's not really a top-notch place to take a vacation. But coming from within Korea, it has 1 advantage: It's cheap. |

Crowds should be lessening, soon.
Yeah, you're right. Its hot/humid... but I mean thats the best time to hit the beach..... At least its not raining/snowing and/or windy as hell like it is the rest of the year. |
