http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/08/21/bush.iraq.speech/index.html

Quote:
As he awaits a crucial progress report on Iraq, President Bush will try to put a twist on comparisons of the war to Vietnam by invoking the historical lessons of that conflict to argue against pulling out.

On Wednesday in Kansas City, Missouri, Bush will tell members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars that "then, as now, people argued that the real problem was America's presence and that if we would just withdraw, the killing would end," according to speech excerpts released Tuesday by the White House.

"Three decades later, there is a legitimate debate about how we got into the Vietnam War and how we left," Bush will say.

"Whatever your position in that debate, one unmistakable legacy of Vietnam is that the price of America's withdrawal was paid by millions of innocent citizens, whose agonies would add to our vocabulary new terms like 'boat people,' 're-education camps' and 'killing fields,' " the president will say.

So it has been compared to WWII, Korea and now Vietnam. Perhaps Grenada is next?

You would have hoped that they learnt a lesson from Vietnam. Still decades on they make the same mistake.

With the technology available now I thought it'd be easier to claim a 'victory' in war. Maybe the US haven't realised this, unless perhaps they have ulterior motives for the war.

From one kock up to another.

Well there is one major difference between the two conflicts. Bush had an exit strategy for Vietnam.

Bush is an idiot. Vietnam was a proxy war betwen ideologies (Communism vs the West), same as North & South Korea. A far better comparison of Iraq, is with Northern Ireland (Catholic vs Protestant approximates Sunni vs Shi'ite). Many Islamic countries don't have separation of powers between Church & State. It took Europe centuries of bloody infighting to work this out. An attempt at Sharia Law in Iran failed. Henry Kissinger was involved in both Vietnam & Iraq strategies (& a raft of other failed foreign policies, like Chile, Bangladesh, Cambodia East Timor etc). That's as far as the similarities go, imho.
