I was reading through a post in the Off-Topic Forum which seemed a little odd, when I noticed that this poster had a few links to some some some guy's website about why he was unjustly incarcerated in the U.S.. The poster was arguing his perspective on a particular topic which happened to be the main thesis of the incarcerated person's website. I don't know if the incarcerated person is the same person posting here or not, but I'm sure they could if they wanted to.
Reading through the post reminded me of just how anonymous the Internet can be and that people may not be who we think they are. So far on this forum I've seen people that frequently post about their hatred for White people, Black people, poor people, Americans, Koreans, Japanese people, etc. There have been a few instances of upset posters stalking each other across threads, people posting false information on police message boards out of revenge, Korean hokwon owners pretending to be Western teachers trolling to see how their school/recruiting business is perceived, etc.
I'm sure the majority of people here aren't crazy enough to something like that, but if someone wanted to enough, they might be able to collect a lot of personal information about people over time. It might not be a good idea to give out too much info about ourselves or that could be used to access our personal information, especially bank info as ESL teachers are known for saving up a bit.
I'm sure these things have been covered in another thread but here are some things that might not be a good idea to share everyone:
*Using your personal name as your Forum ID
*Posting a picture of yourself as your avatar
*Telling people your bank branch
*Posting information that could be used to answer online security questions for your bank (place of birth, first car, childrens names, etc.)
*Telling people where you live in Korea or where you work
*Telling people where you live at home or where you worked in the past
*Linking a blog with personal information
*Telling people your exact birthdate
*Posting your phone number and/or email address |

Not duh! Fresh Prince is right.
There are all kinds of vindictive posters on this and other forums.
I am constantly getting berated for my avatar.
As if i am going to suddenly post my real picture. Oh, sorry posters, i guess I will just show my real face to you now, since you don't like knee-highs. Gee whiz!
As a third generation child in a celebrity family, I grew up learning how to hide my real identity. Here in Korea, i enjoy some anonymity. But, let me post my real picture or give out my real name and all hell would break loose.
I have had countless PM's begging me to meet or give out my phone number.
How do i know who you really are? And even if I did, what makes you think I want to spend my free time with the type of boorish mule-class poster that cannot make friends outside of a message board? |

That's what "duh" means: You're right, but it's obvious/common sense (or should be, I suppose).
This advice is not particular to this message board / message boards in general, it should be baseline common sense on the Internet. |

Actually it is baseline common sense off the internet too. I don't leave my personal information or my underwear where people can find it unless I want them to find it. |
