|
|
I watched the Simpsons Movie in the theater yesterday. It was pretty empty, although it was a 5:30 on a Wednesday. But I was kinda suprised by how many laughs it got. I mean, people weren't rolling in the aisles, but I had figured it would be like when I watched 40-Year Old Virgin here -- just me laughing. In fact, I planned this whole phoney stage laugh that I would do just to annoy people. But sometimes people were laughing more than me. I guess the subtitle writer did a good job. And there's a bit where they show sign in Korean which drew an audible gasp from the crown. Kinda funny.
I hope the movie does well here, but I gotta say overall its a bit of a disappointment. I was hoping it'd be a return to form, like Season 4, but it's more like a recent Simpsons episode. Actually, it's a bit different from both; it's got a weird feel to it. I kinda wonder if they jiggered it a bit for the Korean audience. Maybe they took out some of the more wordy jokes and put in more visual stuff. |

My fiance loves The Simpsons, so we'll be going tomorrow. I stopped watchign the series around Season 9. I don't expect much, but it'll be good to see it in widescreen. |

I downloaded it and showed it to my last english camp class today. They thought it was hilarious that Bart wrote "I will not illegally download this movie" I haven't watched the Simpsons in years, but I enjoyed it and so did the students |

The humor of the Simpsons has REALLY been dumbed down the last 10 years. It's almost slapstick rather than creative and clever and insightful like when it first came out.
I watched the movie, and saw the same slapstick stuff. I'm gonna imagine its gonna be popular here. I don't think it'll be very popular with any serious fans of the show.
I moderately liked it because I've always been a fan, but wouldn't want to sit through it again. |

Most of my Korean friends don't like it b/c it's badly translated.
I agree its lost its spark but it's still good. JUst, it seems to have devled a lot more into adult humour, sort of like a toned down Family Guy. |

I dunno if it's really been dumbed down. It's just a bit worn-out. Every character is pretty much exhausted. That said, the newest episodes are still decent. Still funnier than 95% of what's on TV. Also, you have to remember that when it first came out, it was pretty dumb, catch-phrased based comedy. The whole first season is almost totally unfunny. And most of the second season too. I think roughly around seasons 3 through 8 it really caught fire.
I was talking to somebody the other day who was 18 years old and they said that Family Guy is funnier than the Simpsons. And it drove me up a wall, because Family Guy is so shamelessly derivative of the Simpsons, and employs such cheap humor. But if you compare the latest seasons of two series, you could make an argument that my friend was right. If you were born in 89, you wouldn't even remember the simpsons in their prime. It's like me and michael jackson. Back when I was young enough to date him, he was pretty much past his prime. I have no memory of Thriller coming out and being the biggest thing ever. So talking to this 18 year old, I felt the urge to go on this big angry old man rant about it, but I just let it go, because it's young people's job to be stupid. But I just wonder, how does this young person understand the constant gratuitous 1980s references in Family Guy? I guess it doesn't matter because they're inherently unfunny. |

Family guy is so much better, I watched the Simpson's off the web. It was funny but I have not been into since 2002 or so. Good to go see. Like seeing an old friend. |

I'm only able to watch every Family Guy episode once ... because beyond the shock value of some of the scenes, there is very little depth to the show.
Simpsons has at least some depth and much better replay value in my eye.
BTW, I loved the Simpsons episode. It's too bad some people can't enjoy the movie - because they're fanboy critics who wouldn't have liked ANY Simpsons movie that came out.. |

I'm a big Simpsons fan but I can't stand to watch any of the shows nowadays. However, snobbish BS aside, I think the movie was great. I've already watched it three times (twice with a summer camp class) and I plan to watch it this weekend in the theater.
I think it will do good in Korea, in fact I even caught my students singing the "spider pig" song the last week. The fact that movie was practically made here will make it easy for the anti-American, D-War loving, nationalist crowd to buy a ticket. |

Watched about 20 minutes of the movie after downloading it. The feel of the movie is just weird. The animation quality is too good for my liking. Not as funny as the TV show either. |

I agree, but it's like a recent Simpsons episode that's well made.
By the way, South Park is on its tenth season and getting better all the time. |

You're kidding, right? That's like saying Pearl Harbour with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon was better than 2001: A Space Odyssey. |

Golden Era Simpsons can't be beat (roughly seasons 2 through 5 or 6) but if you compare Family Guy to the last few seasons of the Simpsons, I don't see an argument. Family Guy wins hands down. |
