|
|
Anybody know the true story of what is going on here? The bar
recently ran out of "Alley Cat" Pale Ale from Canada. That is the
only reason I make the trip to this place from Incheon. I asked the
owner and waitresses what is going on and they say they can't import
the stuff anymore. However, every decent bar in Seoul still has the
stuff flowing like a sweet, sweet mountain brook.
What is the truth? Is this the death knell for another mighty whitey
business venture in the ROK? |

Dunno about that but I have heard lance talk about moving close to bucheon station. That would be a death knell, at least for this patron... |

The Rocky Mountain Tavern in Itaewon has Big Rock beer on tap.
As does the Big Rock Bar in Gangnam. |

I like Big Rock beer, and I also like Moosehead. I am also a Molson fan, but they don't have Molson in Korea anymore...I feel your pain as one of those Westerners who doesn't care for Korean beer. Beer made in Egypt, a Muslim country, is much better than the beer in Korea.

RMT also has Alley Cat, which I prefer, but it doesn't do me any
good because I live outside of Seoul. The last train leaves at 11:00
so I have to leave the bar at 10:30. I can't even get there until 9:30.
Big Rock Bar in Gangnam is a rip-off. Good beer, but way over priced.
When are these Korean types going to grab some worldly sophistication
and drop that soju garbage and produce decent beers. |

I hope that business stays as far away from Bucheon station as it can.
I already deal with idiotic Korean drunks every night. I don't need idiotic foreign drunks too. |

what's the story behind alley cat being marketed here? i know that the big rock bar was a result of a korean businessman sojourning in alberta for some while. i've never even heard of alley cat back home.
now if only we could get some shaftebury, whistler pale, victoria lager or newfie black horse here... then we'd be talking. hell, even OB is better than molson canadian, by a long shot. |

Cheers! |

I agree that Big Rock Bar in Gangnam is expensive (6,800 for a 600ml glass), but it is far more pleasant drinking there than at the Rocky Mountain. Things going for Big Rock Bar over the Rocky Mountain:
1. Not in dirty Itaewon
2. Better food
3. Not in dirty Itaewon
4. They clean their lines very regularly. You can really taste the difference.
5. Not in dirty Itaewon
6. Clientele is much better. RMT is typically full of the loudest, most obnoxious of my country(wo)men. However I have seen several very drunk people fall down the stairs leaving the RMT. Now that's entertainment!
7. Big Rock Bar doesn't play the goddamn Tragically Hip (at least not often) at a million decibels.
8. Not in dirty... |

1. Not in dirty Itaewon |
Itaewon is, by far, my favourite place in any Korean city. It is the
only multicultural thing in the entire country. It's success is probably
due to the fact that most of the more interesting businesses are run
by non-Koreans. I was bored with Korean (or lack of) culture after
being in Korea a week. I'm in this country to make a pile of cash
and live as comfortably as possible. Itaewon fits the bill perfectly.
Good food, good people, good beer.
Food gets in the way of serious drinking. Food sucks!

I thought the clientele at Big Rock was the typical moronic, drunken
Korean ajoshi with a total absence of culture, class or sophistication. |

Yeah, anyone who claims Kangnam is clean has kimchi in their head. Just cause your ignorant K-girlfriend says Itaewon is dirty don't make it so... if she's not a floosy, she's probably been there once, saw a black guy and decided it was dirty. |

You've never heard of Alley Kat? Guess you're not from the happening part of the GWN...
Alley Kat is an Edmonton-based microbrewery that produces GREAT brews; it's been imported here for about two years now, and is becoming more popular all the time. A couple of friends of mine import it, and have plans to add other brews...oh, and it's a much better pale ale than anything Big Rock has... |

ok, SNFU moved away from edmonton in the early 90s. they re-formed in vancouver.
since then there's no other thing that edmonton has produced that is worth paying attention to.
i triied the beer. it was like so many of those other microbrews that taste like tax writeoff sandwiches. |
