In Canada, it's not really considered polite to emphasize someone's nationality if it isn't directly relevant to the topic at hand.

Instead of the word "foreigner" you'll probably hear "immigrant," "refugee," "tourist," "international student," "visiting professor" or something specific to the way they came to Canada.

kermo, you're not in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan anymore.

kermo, when you're not in Canada, don't do as the Canadians do.

Hey, I'm from the Mighty 'Peg! (though I know many fine people from Saskatchewan.)

Anyway, I was just trying to add a little scope to the previous poster's comments, not instruct people as to how to behave.

That is a good rule to live by...when not in your home country...do not expect your home values to be the norm.

It is often a pointless exercise to try and take a country and make it fit in your value system...that simply won't work because the reverse would not....just basic logic.

I was talking to a Korean about her life in the U.K. and she referred to herself as waegukin in London. I doubt she spoke about herself in a rude manner.

I think it is all about context. Sometimes it is used in a negative way, just as some here use "gyopo" negatively.

I caught myself muttering "f-ing fat waiguk-in" when I walked by one in a bikini. I guess then I was using it in a negative way. But I was in Seoul last week and exclained to my waiguk-in friend the there are lots of hot waikguk-ins in Seoul.

I am a waiguk-in.

True, the context in which the word is being used would determine whether the usage is derogatory or not, but what I'm saying is that the word in and of itself is not rude or derogatory.
