Probe into private institute teachers

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education is set to launch an investigation into the academic backgrounds of instructors at private educational institutes, officials said Aug. 8.

The announcement was made after several *celebrity instructors, including professors, were found to have *fake academic *credentials.

According to the plan, the investigation will target over 35,000 instructors at some 6,800 private institutes hagwons in Seoul. The office will make inquiry at universities throughout the country regarding national credentials, but foreign academic credentials will be exempted.

Any teacher found to have fake academic records will be prosecuted. In addition, institutes that have employed these instructors will be forced to close.

Operators of private institutes strongly oppose the investigation. "The policy originates from the wrong idea that regulation of private educational institutions is the only way to restore the public education system," said Lee Sang-man, the president of a *prominent association of private institute owners.

I've met two English teachers from the Phillipines, one who had intermediate skill and the other perfect English. Are they legal to teach here?

It's a start.

What they need to do now is go after Public/Private/Universities.

They go after the hagwons because the gov't hates the hagwon system.

As I recall, this all began (most recently) because of a prominent individual who claimed to have degrees from overseas universities.

How does that reconcile with:

"The office will make inquiry at universities throughout the country regarding national credentials, but foreign academic credentials will be exempted."

Claim all foreign degrees and you get a pass?

Immigration has one hand in the howgrons pocket and the other on the phone. Before arriving, immigration will make the call and the howgron will do what is needed.

Trust me.

Guess, hagwons will have to do their jobs and validate the teachers credentials. On the other hand, I don't think one criminal act by a teacher should force the school into bankruptcy.

You've really seen this in Korea? It sounds like your employer is shady if he or she "will do what is needed" before immigration comes.

Actually, in Korea, they're usually white envelopes. Just a minor point.

That is how Berlitz operates in Korea. They have an informer to tell them when immigration is visiting and they recall all E2 Visa holders from company teaching to go back to Berlitz. E2 Visa holders are not allowed to teach at companies but that is how they operate.

(Not directed at FUBAR) This is precisely how a teacher without the proper work visa thinks.

They are if they have a degree AND an f2 visa.

Immigration won't be involved in this one. They are after KOREANs teaching without proper credentials or with fake / fraudulent credentials. This is the office of education and the national police service (as compared to city or provincial police services).

Foreigners and those with foreign credentials will be exempt (they have no way to validate them). They are looking for the fake SNU degrees.
