...these people are insane and they have no respect for us. are the japanese this underhanded and bueracratic? i'm considering heading there next. my contract is up in about 2 weeks and i can't wait to leave. i have experienced the best and the worst here in korea, and the worst far outweighed the best. the visa system is the biggest culprit of all, really. i'm sure i could find another job here that would be peaceful and lucrative, but really on principle i'm choosing to leave because i can't accept how this visa system entraps teachers and unreasonably binds us to greedy and unscrupulous hagwon owners. it's fertile ground for many forms of abuse, and it's been so stressful for me these past few months because i had the bad luck of being employed by a well-connected and conniving lunatic, i just can't respect anything about this country's rules any longer.

plus, the students are ultimately unteachable drones (kids and adults) and no one has any notion or concern for what it takes to create a quality education environment. it's such a scam and a joke it makes me literally naseous.

consider this an amendment to my previous post "top reasons to live and work in korea." i ***don't*** recommend coming here. it's like playing russian roullette. if you get a good boss, like i originally had, life is grand, but i'm guessing there are about 3 good hagwon owners for every 10 dishonest ones. and they have the ability to make your life really, really unpleasant.

and in my opinion, female hagwon owners are the worst and should be absolutely avoided at all costs.

OP, all true indeed. Takes work to get them to follow your rules. Then they try other *beep*. There's always something. Like my boss. He deducts pension correctly but submits the amount that corresponds to my original salary. I've had 2 raises. So what's he paying the health department? And I know he doesn't pay taxes. He even said to me before my last renewal that he could deduct less. I was like, "Nooo. Just deduct the proper amount." I'll hit him with what he owes me when I get near the end. I use the tax as a weapon. It's not a lot of money, but it's annoying as hell. But it always gives me an excuse. So I use it to my advantage.

Still...

Taiwan screws you before you get there. And they can fire you for a good reason, a bad reason, or no reason at all. And they can reduce your hours so as to pay you less. At least they practice this.

I don't know much about Japan, but I'll assume that the women do rock there.
