I've been here for two months and someone has been in my apartment a few times. I confronted my school after the first time, and my boss acted surprised and said I was the only one with a key. So far nothing has been taken, but yesterday someone came in while I was out and my external hard drive is missing. What's the best way to handle this situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, change the locks.

You should always do this when you move into a new place.

DO NOT let your director have a key.

There is probably a sticker on your lock which has a phone number. Usually, those are put there by a locksmith.

If you don't have Korean speaking friends, write your full address on a piece of paper and take it to a locksmith.
Have them replace your deadbolt with a premium lock.

Secondly, call the police and report the theft.
It may not be your director. It could be a previous tennant or your landlord.

If your director is that surprised, then my instincts are thinking of the landlord. If there is no sign of a forced entry, then it is someone with either a key, or a good lock-picking ability. I'd say, change the locks. Then leave a note with the landlord that says "Someone has been entering my apartment, and _________ is missing. I thought I'd let you know that I'm aware of it, and have taken steps to ensure it won't happen again. The police have been notified". Who knows... you might just get your stuff back Smile

Thanks for the replies. The first time it happened my boss asked me a question before I left work that night that was strange. Once I got home and realized someone had been in my apartment it all made sense. So, I don't think it was my boss personally, but he's behind it.
