Looking for a midrange place to stay in Hanoi. Any ideas? I'm a solo, female, by the way.

I've been there twice, and spent a month there one of those times. I can't remember where I stayed. But stay as close as you can to the LAKE and to the FRENCH QUARTER. Tons of hotels/hostels/etc. all over the place in that area. Just take your pick as to where you stay - I didn't see much difference in one from another.

Your hostel link looks fine - looks very social and you could quickly check out others in the vicinity (if its in the French Quarter area).

Good advice. The area behind Highlands Coffee (on the 3rd floor of a large building on the lake's north edge) is packed with lodging.

I stayed at Gia Bao and it was a fucking awesome hotel. Loads of thick towels, power shower, all the complimentary tioletries you can imagine, super clean, and free breakfast buffet.
They will haggle if you stay a few days. I got a suite room for $20/night. It was heaven.

North east side of the lake....
