There seem to be a few Otago grads around in Korea, so here's something to remind you of the old days. The old Undie 500. Good extended video of "scarfies on the piss!"

also someone's uploaded some to youtube.

Quote:

Emergency services were put under pressure in Dunedin last night with crowds of drunk students rioting in the city and clean up is still going on this morning.

A police spokesman said they faced 'major disorder' with a 'multitude' of fires lit and vehicles damaged.

Several police received minor injuries as they dodged bottles to arrest 52 people.

The fire service also came under attack as it dealt with more than 70 call-outs to car and rubbish fires.

Shift Manager Brian Sharp confirmed students were behind the trouble.

The disorder comes as hundreds of Canterbury University students end their colourful journey south to Dunedin in an event called the Undie 500.

Aw, man.... I did the Undie in 1995. Back then we did it in 1970's Kingswoods, Falcons, Escorts, Commer-vans - Cars with MANA!- nothing that actually had a chance of arriving in Dunedin without major engine trouble.... what do people drive these days? Mum-cars from the early 90's, I guess. Glad they still get drunk and riot.

riots were heaps worse than last year and i tend to fall on the cops side this time. TV3 got some good footage on the whole thing. Cops were pretty nutsy, they didn't even have their shields and were facing flying bottles, so big hand for the coppers.

I was back in Dunedin in 2006 for two friends' graduation. I was lucky enough to see the biggest Castle Street riot I'd ever seen, bigger than any riot I'd witnessed in my 4 years at Otago ending in '04. It was a combination of graduation, 120 years of Otago rugby anniversary, the Undie 500 and a game at Carisbrook. It was the biggest night I'd ever seen in Dunners and a huge riot started in North Dunedin. Brilliant, made me proud to be a scarfie.

The best Undie car last year was a panal van covered in dead plastic babies 'The Kahui Kid Killers'. Had to chuckle at that one!

as civilised as i've tried to be since leaving uni, there's nothing like a good drunken riot to send a pang of regret at not being there shooting up my spine. i gradded end of 2005 and in my two years there i wasn't present at any riots, more's the pity

"Kahui kid killers" that's so sick it's gold!

it disturbs me that this behaviour is being condoned. Yes, Otago's got a reputation for being the party university blah blah blah, but this behaviour is embarrassing. Cars got destroyed, several houses nearly burnt down. Drink, party, have fun, no one is saying that these things shouldn't be allowed, but a line was crossed this year, and I think Peter Chin's decision to cancel the event is a wise one. Students have been warned in the past, and now they've got what they deserved.
