Singapore Airlines will be rolling out the A380 superjumbo on October 26th, and a surprise awaits in the seat of every passenger: their personal Linux PC, running Red Hat. In addition to running the in-flight entertainment, passengers can also use a full copy of StarOffice, and there's a USB slot for importing/exporting documents or plugging in your own keyboard/mouse. Screen size is 10.6" (1280x768) in economy, 15.4" in business and a whopping 23" in first class (along with free noise-canceling headphones). The system is already available on current B777-300ER planes and will also be outfitted on the upcoming B787 Dreamliners." |
pretty cool - Hope it comes with a media player cause then I'll just load up my 4gb usb drive with tv shows that I want to watch. |

Sounds interesting, but the little article mentions nothing about free. I'm sure there's a fee for using it, especially in coach. Why else would they go to that expense? |

Singapore Airlines were the first to offer individual video for every passenger including economy included in ticket pricing. This was at least 8 years ago when I first flew them. I'm pretty positive that the new offering is free for economy considering it's bundled with the media distribution of krisworld. The only fee the article mentioned was for a keyboard.
Anyhow hte new krisworld gives incredible number of enterntainment options

The heart of the KrisWorld system is the main server, which is equipped with "terabytes" of storage capacity to hold the content that's made available to passengers, Tong said. When passengers choose to watch a movie or listen to a CD, the content is streamed from the KrisWorld server to the seat's computer, which has 40G bytes of local hard-disk space and is based on a Via Technologies Inc. processor.
The amount of content that's available on the latest KrisWorld system for passengers to choose from is staggering: 100 movies, 150 television shows, 700 music CDs, 22 radio stations, and 65 games. Movies and television shows are refreshed on a monthly basis, meaning frequent fliers will always find fresh content. In addition, the system offers Berlitz language lessons, travel guides from Rough Guides, and live text news, among other choices. |

Redhat is a commercial release so there is a good change they won't include coded for that could potentially be used for watching pirated moveis. |
