A few more of my favorites (these I believe to worthy of the title "exceptionally great photography").
The following photos were taken by Wallace R. MacAskill (1890~1956): an Atlantic Canadian native who trained in portrait photography. He eventually turned his focus to marine landscapes. In the 1920's/30's he was known as one the world's best marine photographers. He was also known as "an eccentric, hard-sailing, hard-drinking, and death-defying lover of the sea."
The following are reproductions of the original glass negatives.

I have always loved the story of Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition(1914~1916). Frank Hurley (1885~1962), Australian crew member and photographer aboard the Endurance, took so many amazing photos (given the sombre circumstances). Here are a few:
The Endurance trapped in ice:
The Endurance at night:
The launching of the James Caird - not so much that the photo is so great, but it represents the amazing journey ahead: small boat, incredibly stormy seas, searching to be rescued...
