After 40 Years, Japan Achieves Warship Dream
< ... > The new Hyuga-class vessel meanwhile can carry several choppers and is mainly tasked with chasing and destroying enemy submarines.
Despite minimal attention from the Korean press, the launch of the Hyuga is worth noting for several reasons. First, the Hyuga, which is also known as 16DDH, is Japan's largest warship since World War II, and it's the Maritime Self-Defense Force's first warship greater than 10,000-tons. The Hyuga is also equipped with a state-of-the-art radar system, likened to a mini Japanese version of the Aegis system. The radar can cover all directions around the clock just as the Aegis does.
What's most noteworthy about the vessel is the debate over what exactly it is. Japan officially calls it a helicopter-carrying destroyer, claiming it is neither a light aircraft carrier nor a helicopter carrier. < ... > |
I find this interesting because according to one blog post, South Korea's military buildup may be aimed more at Japan than at North Korea or China. If true, we could be witnessing the beginnings of an arms race in an already-unstable part of the world.

South Koreas Defense Buildup Aimed at Japan?
< ... > With all the new equipment coming in, the S. Korean armed forces will add new capabilites, but when one thinks about the fact that the main security threat to S. Korea is from the North, well lets just say its overkill. N. Koreas conventional forces have degraded to the point where their ability to effectively carry out military operations is in doubt. However, the unconventional forces are alive and kicking and there is no doubt in their ability to create much harm to S. Korea. But, where is S. Korea investing in? Not in anti-missile defense, or capabilities against NK commandos and NBC weapons. Nor is it upgrading its current arsenal. Instead, as stated above, it is investing in new and expensive military hardware that is more suited to an all out conventional war with a nation that is powerful than it. So, its obvious that N. Korea isnt a priority, then who is it aimed at?
The most obvious answer is China. But the more I think about it that looks doubtful. Lets look it at this way. China has currently 200 or so Sukhoi Flankers in its Air Force. The obvious countermeasure to this is in terms of heavy twin engined fighters are the 39 F-15Ks. But where are they based at? Not Kwangju, where it is closer to China, but Taegu where it faces the East Sea and Dokdo.

Theres a lot of debate about what the tallest tower in the world currently is. Some say the Taipei 101, at 1671 ft to the tip of its spire, is the worlds tallest tower, whereas we might argue that the Sears Tower, at a whopping 1731 ft (and 110 stories), still takes the prize. However, if the enormous, 13,000 ft X-Seed 4000 structure ever gets built in Tokyo - it will win the worlds-tallest-building competition hands down and leave its puny competitors in the dirt.
Looking eerily like Mt. Doom in the above rendering, the mountain-like X-Seed 4000 represents a utopian eco-vision for a self-contained high-rise city in the Tokyo harbor - powered mainly by solar energy. Aesthetically inspired by nearby Mt. Fuji, the behemoth building would measure 13,123 feet tall with a 6 square-kilometer footprint, and could accommodate five hundred thousand to one million inhabitants. |
