yeah, some of this article does seem to not be accurate. figure skating like u guys say.
but swimming, speed skating, etc... there is a definite stereotype.
before park tae hwan, many people said that asians were too short to win a gold medal in swimming events. |
So why aren't Koreans good at playing on a team then? Because they are too individualistic?? |
in baseball, it seems like after the korean performance in the World Baseball Classic, korean mlb players have not been doing so well. this is probably the worst year i have seen in over a decade for korean mlb players.
hee seop choi fell off being time even tho the guy is like a 6'6 270 lbs monster. shin soon choo on the indians did pretty damm well for the brief time he was up, but expect big things from him in the future as well. |

Kim's gone soon, there won't be any players left and the writing seems to be on the wall for the soccer players.
Look forward to seing Choo at Jamsil soon: Mariners acquire Broussard from Tribe - Club sends Minor League outfielder Shin-Soo Choo to Indians.

First of all, I wasn't aware that anyone other than aussies and americans cared about swimming..really swimming? But there is a atereotype that the white man's body is better for swimming? I'd say its in your head.
All those years of carrying round that burden must have worked our glutes. And yes I have no idea what glutes are. |

Hmm...
I would have thought the fact that better facilities, more training for potential talent, better training, sports cooperation between Korea and other foreign countries that have a longer and more successful record in specific sports and MORE MONEY might have something to do with it....
But yeah....the height thing MUST be the reason. Oh and why are people taller anyway? Kim chi, anyone? |
The body does matter in performance on that level.
I don't have the research at hand, but there are "optimal" body formats for each sport. |

Why don't black people dominate swimming like they do most track and field events? |

Dude....already pointed out that there have been champions from China and Japan in most of the sports mentioned. There aren't that many asian athletes competing in these events so it's silly to make a judgement that it's about the body. Take figure skating...How many Scottish figure skating champions are there? I'd bet zero. Why? Lack of facilities and a general lack of interest which is the exact same problems Korean athletics has had until recently.....They will catch up once the interest level catches up....
This is actually pretty silly. Speed skating is HUGE here but noone would say ponder why hmmm I don't know Italians aren't great at it and bring up their race or body type as explanations.... |

Oh they'll find time if you just "motivate" them plenty.

Six top female skaters, four of them teenagers, left training camp Nov. 3 to protest alleged beatings by coaches. The six were not available for comment.
After the alleged abuse was reported, two coaches stepped down and seven board members of Korea Skating Union resigned Wednesday.
During training in October, a coach spanked a skater on her hips with a plastic cover for the skate blade and made her do push-ups until she collapsed, according to the statements. The coach later grabbed her by the neck to punch her face nonstop, they said. The beatings took place not only during training but during international competitions.

"We were routinely hit," one of the six told South Korea's Yonhap news agency. "There were times when I was hit with an ice hockey stick, iron gauges and [hockey shoes].
"This violence happened all the time."
A second skater said the beatings took place not only at Taenung training center, north of Seoul, but also in other countries.
"We were also abused during trips to Colorado Springs and in countries where international competitions took place," she said.
South Korea will now not be represented in women's races at World Cup short-track events in Canada and the U.S. in the coming weeks.
Other athletes have walked out of training in the past after complaining of similar treatment.
Accusations of brutality by coaches is not new in South Korea. A South Korean judo coach was suspended at this year's Athens Olympics for striking a female judoka.
