|
|
An essay related to food brought this comment out froma fairly smart student of mine the other day: "Kimchi is famous all over the World".
I thought about it a for split second then had to disagree.
Pizza, Spaghetti, Sushi, Hamburgers......famous all over the World.
Many people may know what Kimchi is and even perhaps where it comes from (although Im not so sure about that either), but how many 5 star hotels around the globe would ever put it on their menus?
How many Cities/towns in the World would you be able to buy some, as compared with any of the above I mentioned.
How does a smart 15 year old girl in Korea get the idea that Kimchi is famous all over the World?
Does it come from an ad campaign or over-proud documentary on TV, the high school classroom, or what?
Anyway, pumping your kids heads full of untrue "facts" about your Country doesnt help anyone.
Another good example; ask Korean students about Japan, and they all boo... and curse....The rest of the World got over it decades ago, even though no one liked them and they hurt pretty much all of us back in WW2. Who teaches them that? |

It's known in New York and Paris, that means 'the world' to Koreans.
They certainly don't mean in Africa, South America, India or smalltown Canada. |

That is indeed the question. And who doesn't teach them the things they should know? |

What do you know? You're just a dumb foreigner.
Whitey: Little Yun Mi, what's your English name?
Yun Mi: Helen
Whitey: How do you spell your name?
Yun Mi: H I R E N
Whitey: No, it's H E L E N
Yun Mi: But Miss Kim (who can't speak English) says it's H I R E N, she knows more about English than you do cos she's Korean.
Are you getting the picture! Sure they get taught a lot of junk, but it's junk taught by a Korean, so it must be true!
Whitey may say something that is correct, but because it's said by whitey, it's junk.
Leave it alone.
Let them believe, the water clock was invented by a Korean, the sky is bluer in Korea, and Korean is a "Scientific" language. (From Korean Text Books!) |

I do not agree with that because Wal - Marts are in cities of around 10,000 or even less now. I would go with most university towns, cities with a population of over 200,000 people and the like. A midwest grocery chain in a big university town had it in 1998 , for example. But as readily available as pizza...hm. not quite yet |

It's possible she was forced by gangsters to say that. |

Sure it's famous all over the world. When I was young a common expression in our household was: "You're in deep kimchi now, boy - just wait 'til your father comes home". |

There's a speciality Asian food shop near my house in small town UK that sells little cans of Kimchi. Gave me terrible wind. I'd never heard of it before I went to Korea. |

I'm from NY and I would say it's know to Koreans who live in New York. I had a half-Korean boyfriend whose father made kimba[ and I never heard of this stuff till college! |

The best comeback seems like it would be "What is kimchi??" "In my city/country, nobody knows kimchi" but that will just start/reinforce a lifelong inquiry to many foreigners down the road..."Have you tried kimchi??" |

Never heard of kimchi before I was in Taiwan for a good year and my friend had some he had picked up at Costco. He had lived in Korea before. |

Let's believe the world is flat too because whitey once believed it so. |

On the same note, do you guys still defer to China as the centre of the universe? |
