Per capita GDP in Korea is $18,392, rank 36

Most people find they save at least 1 million Won per month, so that's 12 million annually PLUS severance (PLUS pension to those citizens elligible). So, before overtime and illegal income, savings for teaching English are generally 14 million Won, which is 78% (savings) of per capita GDP (before savings).
If you have a life, you WILL NOT save a million per month. I have about a million saved and I am into my 8th month on this year's contract. But, I also used a chunk of coin to take my summer vacation. Or, I'd have about 3 million saved right now. But 1 mil a month? No way! I once had around 8 mil after 2 years here. Still, not 1 mil per month.

nah lad, thell thee this story abat me first job.

I were 8 years old and me dad goes...

'time you earned your keep lad, time thee went t'er university of life'

I says 'whats that dad? whats university o' life?'

And he goes ' you can earn a few bob wit' horny sailors down docks son, they sailors would like young 'un like you'

So on me first night down docks in Liverpool there, me and me dad
wit' just a dripping butty and a tub of vasaline between us saw ship from Liberia dock.

It were tuppence a go for them sailors... by 'eck Safeblad it 'urt, couln't sit down on me orange box fer weeks.

But after first 12 hour shift we went 'ome and paid thi rent like so I was regular down thi docks for 15 years till I started to grow bumfluff and me dad got younger brother on t' work, shame like cos it were regular money, two bob buys you a lot of Wiggin.

I got other jobs like bleach tester and worst job was 'uman electric shock absorber, I had to work christmas day and was on haypenny a week but I were happy see.

Job were 23 hour shifts, 8 days a week, 54 weeks a year! I were always busy and had no time t' think about lifestyle alternatives like.

Anyway, I were in me cardboard box in Wiggin and I thought 'I'm sick o' university of life and went proper university instead like'

4 year later I'm off t' South Korea. On t' plane an all! only rich folk fly on plane so I thought.

So thats me safeblad! Not an 'ero but working class Wink

Princess, I've taken vacations and bought nice expensive toys (my D80 for one), flew my parents over here for vacation, paid off debt back home, and I've still been able to save. I am at less than 1 million per month average only because I got evicted, was unpaid despite having worked, and was jobless for several months. Even so, I managed to save most of the savings I had.

Budget, girl, and quit trying to pick up Korean men are bars.

Yes, Atavistic is dead right this time, Prinnie. You said you've saved 1 million in 8 months?? If spending = having a life, you must've had a blast. It's all relative, isn't it? To me, saving any less than a million per month means I've either not had any illegal income or totally over-spent or both. Sorry to be rude, but Korea really is not a spending country in my opinion (as I thought we agreed in my "is shopping in Korea utterly abysmal?" thread) and I question the taste and depth of any person finding themself able to spend more than 1 million Won in a month. In Florence or Berlin, or my own country? I'd need 5,000,000 Won per month to save what I do in Seoul because of the spending temptations, but here, saving is effortless.

Korea is a country where the more you spend, the more awful one's personality likely is.

HA HA HA! I guess you're excluding spending to get OUT of Korea? Laughing

Damn, I was just going to write that.

I still save plenty more than 1 million a month, but lately I have been spending like mad on food because I just haven't felt like eating Korean food.

I was like that for a long time. I finally tested the job market after 4 years here, and got a job that now allows me to save about 3.0/month. Things are looking up.

Excuse me, but I didn't say I have ZERO savings...just not TONS of savings. At least I never get down to a few thousand won before payday like some people do. Rolling Eyes I may not be wonderful with budgeting, but I don't suck at it either. And...I don't try to pick Korean men up in bars either. That's disgusting. They approach me, sweetie, and I turn them down. I DID date a bartender ONCE, but that's a story I don't care to get into, as it ended with me feeling suicidal.

I'm also proud of myself because I am MUCH better with money than when I first came here. After my first year here, I only had about 50 bucks in change, then I got my final pay and bonus. So that's what I walked away from that job with. In the next years, I managed to save about $3000 one year plus my bonus, and then $8000 after 2 years., including bonus. No matter how much you save, eventually you WILL spend it or die and leave it for someone else to spend. You aren't taking it with you....remember that one!
