Apparently we have a fair number of Korean visitors on this site. Plus we all have Korean students, right? And Korean co-teachers or friends.

Well, some of them are going to visit the United States, Canada, or other English speaking countries, either for vacation or to attend college. For some reason that baffles me, many come back without having eaten any Western food, or at most, pizza, hot dogs and hamburgers.

We all know the reason, right? Western food is "greasy." Next time a Korean tells you this, ask him or her to define "greasy." Sometimes there is a failure of communication in the definitions department.

At any rate, what foods would you suggest Koreans eat when abroad that they might enjoy? What foods would you suggest they avoid?

Speaking of which, on my recent flight to Tokyo I overheard a group of Koreans asking Japanese flight attendants where the nearest Korean restaurants were and if they could draw out maps to those restaurants. It's like c'mon, Tokyo's like gourmet food paradise and all they wanna experience is Korean food?? Shocked

The world is full of good eats. Anything besides Korean food would probably be a good experience for them.

Enjoy? None of it. Koreans don't enjoy food.

I showed my students this picture and they practically flooded the classroom with drool...

Jamaican patties...I had no idea my kids would want to eat them. They even asked me if I could make them. Sadly, no oven = no patties....

Koreans that Ive met in Toronto all love them. I told them that was the equivalent of a kimbab as far as a quick snack goes. I was tempted to bring a box of Jamaican patties over when I was home last.

Really? See, you learn something new everyday. I miss jamaican patties. At least when I was in school out of state, my parents would bring some for me when they visited. I said it before and I'll say it again, there needs to be( if there isn't already and if so, I need DIRECTIONS) a Jamaican restaurant in Korea....

This is truth. You can't appreciate food after years of eating bland-hot pepper paste. I think it kills taste buds.

I took a ton of teachers at my school to Petra's in Itaewon. They hated it, especially the male teachers. It seemed like age and sex realllly influenced their openness to eat new things.

PS, I know it's really tempting to vent about Korean food, such as how I just ate a piece of BBQ chicken that was 95 percent bone and 3 percent meat and 2 percent barbecue sauce that costs about 17,000 won and was served with a roll of toilet paper, but maybe we can keep it positive about other foreign foods to try?

A pita from Pita Time in Itaewon. I had one a couple days ago for lunch. Grilled chicken, standard veg and cheez, sandwich oil. Damn that was good.

Perhaps Shepherd's Pie would perform well, given the Korean penchant for mixing potatoes with any western food.

How about 'any'? Or do you just want us to name foreign foods?

Whatever.

Non-Korean foods. Stuff they haven't had while living in Korea. Stuff they are only likely to encounter while living or travelling abroad. Stuff you liked to eat back home.

To the point, when they go abroad, what should they try?

My advice would be Southern smoked pulled pork barbecue. Served on a sesame seed bun with coleslaw. With a Coke or beer.
