Extract from Handy hints for the teacheret al

Write a folktale-
I had them create a folktale story in a writing class. I first created a picture storyboard on the board. Found it easier to communicate the idea through visual which inspred interest, particiapation and healthy amounts of creativity. I then got the students to write a paragraph each corresponding to the number on the picture story board. I then cut and paste all the best bits together and come up with one great story! The title Cookie Monster and the Happy Family We will do illustrations for this then bind it as a book for the kinda students to read. It turned out a treat. They were proud of their book and gave it to their parents as a gift. I have yet to do the copy for kinda but definitely will. Its my first story created with the kids- ill keep a copy myself. Most surprising thing was the students came up with the moral of the story as all folktales have. Dont be greedy- share

Animals- mammals, fish, birds et al-
I recently did an Australian Animals Project with my students. I allocated all of them an animal. Initially we learnt about the animal through drawing the shapes and building on it to form the animal eg. Emu circular body, long legs and triangular shaped beak. We had the bat, platypus, great white shark, emu, little fairy penguin, sugar glider and the kangaroo. Australia has the strangest animals, some are nocturnal, marsupials, mammals but lays eggs and build nests, birds but cant fly, fish that dont lay eggs! We explored animal groups, vocabulary, habitat and I wish to create dialogue stories using animal puppets in the future! Whatever the students animal I allocated has now become their favourite animal- they feel connected to the animal!

Random acts of kindness-
Check out the Random Acts of Kindness Program Ideas Discussion Topic. Random Acts of Kindness Program ideas are endless and tend to be contagious like a smile. I have begun to implement this program. I have one productive class that will help develop the tools required eg. many cut outs of hearts for some of the other classes and signage etc.

Heart project-
When a student or a class shows an act of kindness get them to write this up on a heart chain hanging in the class.
The deets would b each class has one chain of hearts. Everyone gets their name written on a paper heart connected with paperclips. After this intiation they receive a sticker heart on the name heart- difficult to get. To promote understanding and remembrance of recieving each sticker heart here i have popped up a graffitti poster on the wall where the kids can write various phrases eg. Jeff sharpened my pencil, pushed in my chair, helped me with phonics, helped pack my bag, said kind things about me et al. Get the student to express the sentence that u write on the graffiti poster on the wall and correct when necessary.

New Vocab-
I have started introducing new vocabulary eg. kind and thankful. I have replaced nice with kind in our class rules and introduced thankful into weekly sentences. What are you thankful for? Today i got an amazing answer from a 7 year old kinda student. I am thankful for water because it helps people and u can cook rice! i also get the students to formulate a sentence using the new vocab- to check understanding- if its a short sentence ask for a longer one and!

Reading and Writing-
Have each student write a positive comment about every student in their class on 3x5 cards or paper. Pass the notes to the children they describe, and have them make a colorful collage of the answers on the wall. Encourage students to reflect on their experiences and on the meaning of their activities through journaling, classroom or small group discussion, essay, art, poetry, collage, etc

Acronoyms-
I whacked the word Korea on the board and asked what is this an acronym for? What does the K in korea stand for? It was great! We have designed a puzzle poster that reflects Korea and us as a group! You can also do it with their names et al.

Kind
peOple
Rice
English
hAppy

Pay for lesson plans-
A friend once shared an amazing resource with me. Twas a collection of worksheets ready to go! Saved my life i suspect at one point! It is a paid product. u get 5 cds over 200 lesson worksheets. Enough to keep u occupied for the year. Each worksheet has variations on application and english level. if i didnt have it i would invest! Covers all western themes too- halloween, christmas thanksgiving, valentines day et al.

Great ideas Ellie!

But the website sucks. This day and age, you shouldn't be paying for worksheets.

A) Make your own - helps develop teaching ability and hey, who knows the students best?

B) Modify others that are free! Lots of free stuff out there. LOTS. I hate people making education into a business, in this manner (ie. download and pay). Payment should be for a service, not a thing - when it comes to education.

C) Use a variety. Usually these kinds of paid materials are all the same and generate student boredom faster than you can throw a student a pencil.

D) try to wean yourself off of paper and handouts. Language is best a communicative process, not a successful completion of an exercise. Handouts are good use of time for students at home, as a review.

My opinion.
